On the Meanwood Valley trail in Leeds today (before the rain).
One of the things I miss about the UK is the way riverside walks are done. In Japan, everything is flood-proofed to the max, so picturesque riverside walks are mostly only up in the mountains.
I haven’t had a proper holiday in ten years, I’ve never had the money to go to somewhere with white sand, so this is the view for the next week from my room in Mauritius.
Too bad you couldn’t get somewhere pretty. Maybe in another ten years?
Oh that looks gorgeous. I hope you‘ll have the best holiday ![]()
Walking along a completely deserted trail to a waterfall (seriously, didn’t see a single other person all day on a Saturday!) and the first thing we stumbled across was this little impromptu shrine:
After an hour or so, the tiny trail you see above suddenly, and totally unexpectedly, became this:
Further on, the path was lined with dozens of these:
(the waterfall was nice too)
Went for a walk this morning. I have a new word for everyone „Waldbaden“
meaning going to bathe in the woods in the sense of „enjoying the green and letting it wash over you.“
Thinking about this I want to note that Wald is a wonderful word. We can even make a plural from it: Wälder. And it is used for no end of nice (and not so nice) words:
Waldesruh, Waldsterben, Waldweg, Waldluft, Waldspaziergang, Schwarzwald, Waldlichtung, Waldrand, Laubwald.
Woods on the other hand pronounces like „Wutz“ which is another word for pig. So to my ears that is a little … off.
PS: Naherholungswäldchen (that’s the one I thought of first this morning and the reason to make this post… and then I forgot it) → it is a small patch of trees between two Stadtteile where people go for walks directly from their homes…
Love the shirt ![]()
My son got it for me for my birthday last year. I don’t think he ever expected me to wear it!
My goodness, I wonder why…
(To be fair, other buildings of Stockport College are less locked up tight. But this one has been like this since I first came here a year ago.)
It took me a moment to see the glass
Oopsie. Confusing perspective. ![]()
What is that weirdly-scaled newspaper thing on the left?
It’s paving on the promenade.
Can’t remember the significance of it, but it’s art
It’s a big art painted on the pavement of the promenade. Think it’s called the Comedy Carpet. It’s like big billing posters with references to comedians and performers over the years; like Morecambe and Wise, Tommy Cooper, Carry On…, Bruce Forsyth etc.
Looks kind of like Southern California…
