What do you collect (other than boardgames)?

Well, I’ve just finished building my first Gundam:

And I’ve ordered two more kits (both HG kits of different suits from The Witch From Mercury, as that’s the only series I’ve watched so far).

A new guitar pedal has joined my collection! And it … looks very familiar:

Marshall made a new version of the Shred Master and I found it on sale (and I had an annoying day at work on Thursday), so I decided to treat myself. Sounds pretty much identical to the original, but without any of the problems it had developed.

There’s a video with a sound comparison up on My Instagram.

In other news: I now have 5 Gundam models built and another 7 waiting to be assembled.

I found a ret hot deal on a couple of Nerf pistols and a skeet shooting toy. Fun little things and wildly improved from anything I used as a kid.

“That’s great, Vic. Why here?”

Has anyone looked into this hobby? My goodness it’s a rabbit hole and I need as much outside support as possible to keep from falling in.

My impression of Nerf guns from the one time I looked was that most of them didn’t seem to be appreciably better or worse than one another, despite how fancy they may look; so probably just figure out what type sounds the most fun and get one of those.

I bought two about 15 years ago (my workplace at the time was briefly obsessed and I noticed a good sale, so I “upgraded” :‍), and my favourite was an air-powered model. You loaded up 10 darts in a clip, used the sliding pump handle to inflate the air bladder inside to prime it, and then it would auto-fire darts very rapidly for as long as you held the trigger – it could empty the clip in less than a second. You’d spend far more time reloading it than firing it of course, but the rate of fire made it a lot of fun / the terror of the office nerf wars. (It was this weird-looking thing.)

do you have the space to store this new hobby and to use it? i seem to recall you struggling to keep your game collection small?

munition for these tends to get lost.
do you really want to teach your kids that shooting weapons is fun?

(you asked for support to keep from falling)

Thanks for trying you two. But just… just for an example of what I meant here:

I don’t know what value Adam Savage actually brings to my life except to say that his unbridled joy always ends up making me feel real good. I love this video.

Got NOTHING on that minigun though. :kissing_heart:

In other news now I have a magazine-fed “rifle” to play with. Told my brother in law about the bargain. Nephews promptly offered to kick my butt. I need practice.

[EDIT] I feel weird talking about “gunplay” without emphatically stating my revulsion to firearms. Enough said for the sake of the thread but I have incredibly strong opinions on the matter and didn’t want to even whiff of a gun proponent.

Maybe that could be the new slogan for the anti-gun lobby in the US. “Ok keep your guns but they can only fire Nerf bullets…”

God help me, I jumped in. @brutist any tips here after your own first foray? I wanted to paint this brute but I might leave it bare since it transforms.

[EDIT]

14 parts in this piece alone, three of which need to move. Definitely skipping the (pre-assembly, at least) paint on this one.

Nit really much in the way of tips. All you shoul need is some nippers and some sort of knife for getting rid of unwanted nubbins (files/sanding pads are good if you really want them gone). Tweezers are handy for applying tiny stickers.

My main tip is that it’s a lot quicker to clip out a bunch of pieces, clean them up, then assemble, rather than clip > clean > assemble for each piece individually.

Yeah it’s the snips (and mouldlines) I’m a bit hung up on, mostly because I’m not likely to apply paint. With minis I’m scraping those suckers down without much concern because I only care about smoothness; here I’m damaging the finish.

I’m doing what I can to keep my snips tight so I can keep my scraping/sanding to a minimum, and specifically to minimal areas.

I tend to do this, but it requires diligence. Case in point, I spent the better part of two hours this morning ever so carefully undoing most of the torso because I managed to reverse the (absolutely critical) shoulder joints last night.

I haven’t made a mistake like this since I was a kid (the first time you ruin a kit will smarten you right up) and I’m thankful I used a light hand with the plastic cement. So, just to expand on your point: work in discrete packages.

Ah, yes. I’m used to Gunpla, where the instructions break it into discrete sections anyway and there’s no glue involved, so no worries if you have to undo anything.

In defense of this kit, it was all my fault. The instructions are basically flawless. But that speaks to the diligence aspect. I had those bits laid out nicely and then totally set them out for the wrong facing.

[EDIT]

Walker Machine Xabungle is go!!!

Please excuse the fingernails but they REALLY came in handy and I’m glad I’m a milk drinker.

Apparently I am collecting RPGs again. Except this time … digital ones. Recent Humble Bundles have helped along my book collecting:

It’s usually quite a bit of work ordering the bundle, annotating the pdfs for my Calibre archive and generally making things findable. Often the books have no authors set etc… I have yet to actually plan and play any adventures and campaigns… I have of course played some of these systems in the past (Unknown Armies, Vampire, MotW, Planet Mercenary, half a game of Fiasco–yes mostly went like the name implies, Exalted). This is my calibre shelf that features a book from each game system more or less… there are a lot more in my archives

I have actually never played Paranoia. But we talked a lot about it during uni. Other people had played…

I only asked cos Humble Bundle had a big Paranoia sale not all that long ago.

I’ve played - its… mixed! It can be hilarious if people play it in the right mind.

I have not bought all the various bundles. quite a few… but not all of them.

these are even more aspirational than … Sidereal Confluence & Dune

Quite a few crowdfunders in there as well:

  • Exalted Essence
  • Still missing: Blue Planet Recontact (I really can’t wait this was one of the earliest RPGs I ever played and if they ever get it done, it will be gorgeous)
  • Koriko
  • Humans
  • Planet Mercenary
  • 1400 Zine
  • XDM
  • Herbalist (and Geologist soon) Primer are mor resource books than games. still listed here.
