Just to keep going on the tangeant of weird translation, it always baffled me how we translated some movie title in french.
So in France, unlike Quebec, we don’t translate every movie title in french. So, some of them keep their original title : (for example, Fight Club is called Fight Club, Interstellar is called Interstellar, etc; even though we could translate them almost literally (Interstellar would be “Interstellaire” so not that different).
Some movie title are translated, but not very different “Le roi lion” instead of “The lion king”, and so on .
BUT ! The weirdest one for me are the one translated from english into english again! And so: Step Up became … “Sexy Dance”; the Hangover became “Very bad trip”. “Cruel intention” became “Sexe Intentions”. Do you see a thread here?
It actually seems rather close to what I objected to with Princess Mononoke. That one treats a common noun, mononoke, as if it were a name; this one takes “Sen” as a name while not revealing that it’s also a number word, sen=1000. In both cases the name/apparent name obscures the literal meaning of the word and whatever it implies.
For that matter, is sen actually a possible name for a child in Japanese? Or is this like the Prisoner being told “You are Number Six”? That is, is Yubaba “giving [her] a number and takin’ 'way [her] name,” as “Secret Agent Man” puts it?
Sen is not a recognised name AFAIK; I haven’t checked a comprehensive name list, i.e., whether or not it would be rejected on a family register, but I’m pretty sure. Yes, the parallel with the Prisoner is appropriate.

I was the same, the first 3 or 4 episodes are kind of meh. Then, after it warms up, it gets much better; but it was more likely to be stopped after those 3 or 4 than something like say… Firefly??
I was looking at the episodes by season, and its unreal the up-trend in quality until season 4 dips down again. Season 3 is unbelievably good. That said, I wouldn’t even say its the kind of show where “you have to get through season x to get to the good stuff” like other shows. Its strong, but there’s so much hype around it and season one doesn’t really deliver on that level of hype - but instead is just a good sitcom.
I’ve been enjoying Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories so much lately (it even played an integral part in my proposal ruse) so imagine my delight when the original 3 seasons that were broadcast first on Japanese television showed up on Netflix.
@superjaz has been watching these as well. She’s seen a couple seasons before, but it appears an earlier season showed up on Netflix so she’s gotten to watch new stuff, rather than just episodes she is familiar with. It’s a very fun show. The Korean version, Late Night Restaurant, is also good.
Yeah at first I thought they made a new season, but then everyone was younger like Marilyn.
I really love this show.
I’m about half way through, some of the episodes of Midnight Diners storylines mesh with Late Night Restaurant. Which of course, because they are both based on the same manga, but Tokyo didn’t.
Some of the Korean version episodes are unique to that show.
Others, a few tweaks like a dish potatoe salad to candied potatoes. Or 100% same as the buttered rice episode.
We just finished Expanse 4 yesterday (I’ve read the books up to 7 just as context, so I know how it’ll go on, not much cliffhangery stuff for me). Even knowing what’s happening–so much drama. I love the series but it’s not exactly light-hearted fun.
To rectify my huge Bildungslücke (Germans have a word for a “gap in education”) regarding Anime, we scrolled through what Netflix has on offer and watched the first three episodes of Fullmetal Alchemist–I can’t quite tell you how I chose this from all that’s on offer… maybe I heard the title before and I played too much Opus Magnum? Anyway, I liked it quite a bit so far.
I needed comfort background TV that I could write up notes and work crosswords and otherwise not focus on very closely this weekend so I streamed Dark Shadows circa 1969.
