Tonight’s double feature: The Girl on the Train (2016) and Brave (2012)
TGOTT is a very good film, which I see was marketed with the inexplicable quote “The darkest, sexiest, most daring thriller of the year.” Acquaintances of the source (the quote is attributed to Entertainment Weekly) must have been thoroughly disturbed to learn that this person had found the film sexy in any sense, let alone “the sexiest of the year”.
I am disappointed to find that ‘The Girl on the Train’ is not a film version of Pete Atkin’s 1970 song ‘Girl on the Train.’ That, I would love to watch. This, not so much.
Murderbot is a good representation of the book (till now). Though I would still prefer a female murderbot. It is fun to watch.
We also started the first episode of Slow Horses on Apple TV, just wanted to start and then finish it another day but it drew us enough in that we watched the whole episode which is a good sign I think.
Went and saw Thunderbolts* last night, and frankly…it was really good! I think it did justice to showing damaged people dealing with depression and coping the best they can, in the wrapper of a comic book movie. Certainly the best of the Marvel films of this phase. Definitely deserves to be doing better at the box office.
Ah, Florence Pugh. The first time I saw her was in Lady Macbeth which I thought was superb. I almost watched that one again last weekend, but my partner opted for The Girl on the Train on a 50/50 whim, so I was intending to watch it this coming weekend instead. Looking at IMDB, I’ve not seen very many of her other films (just Midsommar and Dune pt2). I should remedy that, as she’s been very good in the ones I have seen.
For anyone who hasn’t seen her in the Marvel things she’s very fun in those (as Black Widow’s sister) especially the Hawkeye tv series. Must watch Thunderbolts.
For early Florence Pugh I’d recommend Fighting With My Family, a biopic of the early days of a pro wrestler which nonetheless manages to be interesting.
Florence Pugh is great. Always. One of those rare actors who make anything they’re in worth watching just by being in it.
Greta Gerwig’s Little Women, remarkably, manages to have three such actors in it. As well as Florence Pugh it also has Saoirse Ronan and Meryl Streep. As well as the always good value Laura Dern and Bob Odenkirk.
That show still frustrates me. The Kate and Yelena side of it is great, but everything previous Clint appearances set up was terrible and undermined trying to adapt the Fraction/Aja storyline.
I have been watching Barbeque Showdown on Netflix which really is the dumbest possible bbq-bake-off type thing, but now I want 14-hour smoked brisket. Also Blown Away is the same but with glass blowing and is brilliant.
Rewatching Kaiju #8 with my partner. Just as fun the second time.
Started watching Bungo Stray Dogs which is quite good. At least for me it’s good, I haven’t read the manga. Tv Tropes informs me fans of the manga are unhappy with the way the arcs are condensed.
Still watching Apothecary Diaries S2. This is book 4 of the light novel and I found some of that book a bit slow and tedious and it translates almost the same to the anime with recent episodes being somewhat “please get on with the plot” … still love it though. Maomao is the best.
We watched 9 episodes of the first season of Demon Slayer in the German dub because English is unavailable for that season. And we quit. We may try a couple of episodes in Japanese with English subtitles and see how that works. The German translation is meh, the German voice acting is lackluster–as usual (I always watch English dubs or Japanese with subtitles). We found the dialogue childish, too much tell not show, on-the-nose with barely any dialogue between characters instead a lot of inner monologuging explaining in a “no shit sherlock” kind of way what is going on. This show is rated R in the US… while I would think it is targeted at maybe 12 year olds considering the complexity and all the explanations? Subtlety there is not. I am major confused.
Black Butler S4 takes place in Germany. And here is a case where I switched to the German dub because the fake German accents the characters use are soooo off-putting. So despite being a fan of this manga/anime I have not finished watching it. Just skip the accent if you can’t be bothered to get it right. Frieren got it right btw! This is evident with the way Stark is pronounced Shtark or the ‘e’ in Flamme. Just saying, it is possible. Another issue with this one is that the MC spends most of the first half of the season sick in bed. Not helping.
Make Heroine ga Oosugiru (Makeine: Too many Losing Heroines), a cute high school romance I stumbled across that was much better than expected about a boy who doesn’t have a clue that a girl likes him
Started watching Berserk and enjoyed it quite a lot–very metal–only to figure out that Crunchyroll starts this one at S3 and nothing makes sense without knowing what happened before. Sure the old anime is old and the new is new. But I like knowing what is going on. Also my partner watched the original anime way back when it was aired and said we need to watch that first.
edit: forgot this one. We finished Death Note. Light is the worst. Also the second arc/half is really not as good as the first. This one really looks old. The image quality on Netflix was not great.
And a bunch of other stuff. I was sick in bed for almost two weeks.
