What are you watching?

There sir you are all too sadly correct.

I went to a screening of Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai which I’d not seen in ages.

I think there was an age-of-digital-media blunder with the set-up, as there were no subtitles for the French dialogue for that one character. It doesn’t ruin the film, but it was a shame because I have clear memories of that dialogue being very funny in context.

The whole film is pretty funny (at least intermittently), and super quirky. I’d forgotten a bunch of things – for instance, that the Mafia in the film are evidentially so rubbish at organised crime that they keep getting hassled by their landlord for being behind on the rent.

I’m happy to have had another chance to see Ghost Dog on the big screen. There are at least three Jim Jarmusch films I like better, and I don’t feel the need to watch this one at home or to own a copy, but it’s still really good!

I finally watched Kaiju Number 8. That was a fun one. Good pacing, good characters. The drawing style didn’t quite mesh with me but the premise and the comedy made more than up for that aspect.

We have activated Netflix for now so now I can binge through the anime only available on Netflix. While my partner can catch up on a few shows he is interested in.

We got started with Castlevania (not Nocturne) which is of course not an anime. I have not played any of the games. I find myself in a bit of reverse culture shock. I cannot quite put my finger on it but it seems to be on the boring side compared to other animated shows I’ve watched recently. It might be that the first season of 4 episodes is just a pre-amble to the actual plot?

We got to the S2E1 of Castlevania before I asked if we could watch Death Note instead. The image quality for Death Note is abysmal for reasons that aren’t quite clear to me. It is older, sure but that doesn’t mean it has to be terrible? But the plot is of course very engaging.

I also got started on My Happy Marriage–I have already read the manga. And the story hits just as hard in animated form.

I get to see Suspiria (1977) on the big screen again on Monday, so I rewatched the 2018 film yesterday as a prelude. The two have surprisingly little in common with one another, as the later film really is a ā€œreimaginingā€ of the premise, and it steers well clear of the iconic stylings of the original film, while bringing its own unique attributes. It’s a good thing – I thoroughly like both films for entirely different reasons.

It won’t be possible to best my first time seeing the 1977 film on a big screen (because Goblin was playing the film’s soundtrack live on that occasion!), but it’s going to be a similarly large audience, and I suspect there might be more newcomers to the film on Monday’s screening, so that should be fun.

(I just looked back in this thread to see whether I’d talked about Suspiria before, and was reminded of my mini psychedelic horror festival, which was an excellent day :).

Oh

Actual Goblin?

Actual Goblin, circa 2013. The programme notes tell me the line up on the night was:

  • Claudio Simonetti (keyboards)
  • Massimo Morante (guitars)
  • Maurizio Guarini (keyboards)
  • Bruno Previtali (bass)
  • Titta Tani (drums)

Meanwhile my soundtrack CD for the film lists:

  • Claudio Simonetti
  • Massimo Morante
  • Fabio Pignatelli
  • Agostino Marangolo
  • Antonio Marangolo (on one track only)

So Actual/Partial Goblin, depending on your viewpoint :).

I’m not sure whether they were touring with the film specifically on that occasion, or if it was something they were doing in amongst regular gigs, but I believe they performed it a bunch that year, and it seems like they’ve continued to do it from time to time.

I’m seeing ā€œ45th anniversaryā€ events, so I suspect 2027 will probably provide opportunities to see an incarnation of Goblin performing live to the film in various locations for the film’s 50th anniversary!

The film, somewhat weirdly, got two different remasters around 2017. I picked up the Synapse release, and I think they did a lovely job.

I must catch it! It’s doing incredible box office numbers.

That does NOT look like a film that Tom Hanks would be involved in, unless much much earlier in his career!

Saw Suspiria (1977) on the big screen again :).

The film is a glorious assault on the senses, and I love that about it. It’s an experience (evidenced by some of the loudest chatter I’ve ever heard from the crowd filing out of the theatre post-screening).

No, it is recent. He isn’t in it for very long though.

I watched Dune parts 1 & 2 this weekend.

Some of my audio hardware died with a loud pop tonight half way through part 2, so I had to watch the rest on a smaller screen. Sigh. Not sure what fixing that is going to entail…

I spent bits of part 2 singing ā€œwe’re going to need a montage!ā€ (from Team America: World Police), because they were jumping from one thing to another so quickly, trying to cram it all in (I presume). I felt similarly perplexed when significant new sub-plots were introduced about 80% of the way through the film.

There were also a bunch of Giant Eagle moments (i.e. ā€œif you had this tech all along, why did any of that other stuff need to happen earlier?!ā€) I’ve no idea if it’s more logical in the book.

I thought it was good in many ways and, short of making it much longer, I expect they did quite well all things considered; but it felt like a cut-down, sliced-up story (which I presume is exactly what it is). I lost interest in reading the book a long time ago, though, so this will do :).

Just watched the last episode of Lower Decks and I’m sad there’s not more.

I’m not really a Star Trek fan, though I have always enjoyed the occasional TNG episode, but I fell in love with this show after watching a few episodes at a friend’s house a couple months ago.

It’s so good and pretty much everything I want out of an ā€œadult animationā€ show, and easily is the perfect Star Trek show for me.

One of my prized possessions is the soundtrack on vinyl. It has the entire script printed on the inner sleeve.
