What are you watching?

It was real - the whole thing was faked - the other jury members, plaintiff, defendant, lawyers, judge, officials etc were all actors. The whole court and case was faked (it was a faked civil trial to simplify things). It had the potential to have been brutally unkind, but they handled it well. They also did really, really well in picking their mark (for want of a better term) - he is a genuinely kind, empathetic, and sensible person, and they did a good job of showcasing that, and they never made him the butt of any jokes.

How many laws are they breaking by falsifying a jury duty summons and impersonating court officials?! That’s absolutely insane.

(I suppose the answer will turn out to be ā€œnoneā€, possibly because it never occurred to people that anyone would do that, even though my impression has always been that impersonating a police officer is going to get you into plenty of trouble almost anywhere.)

It was made in America, the land of simultaneous over- and under-regulation, so who knows.

Notably, there was no-one impersonating a police officer, as it was a faux civil case rather than criminal.

I imagine the production studio had a whole raft of lawyers review it all to ensure they would not get in legal trouble.

Having read about the lengths Derren Brown goes to to make sure his ā€˜marks’ for his shows will be ok and that all legalities are sorted etc, I’m sure they had it all figured out!

ā€œā€¦saw a tik tok of Ronald explaining the negative after effects he felt paranoid and didn’t go out for a whole month afterwards because he was questioning reality.ā€

from the comments on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFdc_olGaT0

Sure, they wanted to make him look good, and they gave him a lot of money by way of compensation (which I expect was just their tactic for discouraging him from suing them – I’m struggling to imagine a real court taking anything but a very dim view of the whole production). My brain has settled on ā€œwtf?!ā€ as my main reaction, though.

I’d not heard about his negative reaction, that is troubling.

Oh no.

No.

Make it stop.

I do not like the violence, and I don’t feel that Seth MacFarlane’s comedic sensibilities are a great fit. (OK, he didn’t write it, I thought he did. But the trailer at least feels very Seth).

I don’t hate Liam Neeson in the Frank Drebin role, but not sure I really love it either. But I can’t really think of anyone who would be better.

My opinion will be based on if Weird Al cameos

It’s ā€œreality ā€œ television. If you assume that everyone involved is lying, you’re unlikely to be wrong. The supposed mark was hired from a Craigslist advertisement. Now, I’ve only been on juries in two us states and one federal court, and summonsed in two other states, none of which are California, but none of them solicited for jurors on Craigslist. So the guy is either continuing to play a part, or dimmer than a black hole.

It’s entirely possible that he did not know exactly what he was getting himself into (and I don’t think I would take the other side of that bet), but he had to know something was going on.

I have finished watching the new (2020) Fruits Basket anime.

I donā€˜t watch slice of life series and I am usually quite annoyed by love-triangles (Twilight broke the trope) and this one is tagged ā€žlove-polygonā€œ which really doesnā€˜t seem to be an improvement. It could only make things worse, right?

And yet… for some unknowable reason I kept watching. And crying. I have never cried quite so much watching any other show before.
:sob: :sob: :sob: And kept at it. Why? I donā€˜t know? But I think I quite enjoyed it. Including the crying. :sob: I looked over at tvtropes and clicked on the ā€žTearjerkerā€œ subpage and as expected itā€˜s a full recap of the story :stuck_out_tongue:

So if you need to clean out your tearducts, hereā€˜s my recommendation. Or if you just need a good cry for other reasons. The 2nd season was far more teary than the first or the final.

ps the MCs angry voice mellows out after a while

I got my wife the original Fruits Basket anime complete collection way back when, and when we finished the last disc, she was like, ā€œWhere’s the rest of it.ā€ For whatever reason, they only got through about half of the manga before wrapping up the show. Some characters were never introduced, plot lines were totally unresolved. Just very disappointing.

We did start watching the 2020 version when it was released, but never did finish it. If I remember correctly, my wife said it was definitely being closer to the manga. Just another in a long stretch of shows that we mean to get back to and finish.

afaik this new anime is complete. the final scene aligns with the manga according to trope wiki  but the final season presses 7 volumes of manga in 13 or so episodes (see wiki)

That’ll be one to avoid! I used to really like Liam Neeson but he’s just become a caricature of himself.

Well if there’s any film where a caricature might be appropriate, it might be this one.

Well yes, but it looks dreadful!

Oh, yes. Yes, it really does.

Pretty good and showed that, despite The Batman, Robert Pattinson can act.

I’m loving the bonus material included on the Eye of the Cat disc.

He’s been a fine actor for a while. I don’t think Batman is the best showcase for acting!!
