What are you watching?

I’m still working on season 3 so I’m a little sad to hear of the abrupt end. The biggest culprit of this I’ve seen recently is Penny Dreadful - that -really- felt like a show that was unexpectedly cancelled and rapidly wrapped up. Not sure if that’s what happened - I kind of hope so because otherwise that was some pretty poor writing for the last season.

Annual Security Training, season 3.[1] Unless you work for my employer, you can’t watch this. Be glad. It reached its peak in the first season, and it’s just beating the same horse, over and over. And over. And over. and over.

[1] really, that’s what they call it. It’s got a recurring cast of characters, and plot. Not good characters, nor good plot, but they’re there.

Just finished watching watchmen the TV series. It’s got some pacing issues but I really enjoyed it. Feel like it didn’t get much hype when it came out.

Comments in places I read at the time raved about the first episode for reminding people of the 1921 Tulsa massacre, but went quiet in subsequent weeks.

Oh I loved it, a perfect show for me. Absolutely wonderful.

The fact that you didn’t say Scottie Pippen confirms it. I’ve never heard of anybody calling him Scott, but that must be his name…

I nearly said this!

They even introduced new characters in the last few episodes as though there could be a spinoff or cast refresh, and then just cancelled the whole thing without warning.

And it really was without warning, the creator was still saying “we’ll see if we get renewed” and changed to “I always meant for this to be the final episode” (clearly untrue).

Loved that show, what a cast!

Oh yes, incredible. Eva Green is just amazing. Greatly underrated actor. A standout amongst standouts.

Watched a few episodes of Guy Montgomery’s Guy Mont Spelling Bee. Yes, it’s a show about spelling, which sounds like it would be pretty dull, but somehow it all works. Was a NZ show apparently (and indeed, Guy Mongomery is from NZ). Pretty silly stuff, but very entertaining.

Oh no, it is not his name  it is Scotty according to wiki, I thought that’s like a nick name :see_no_evil:

Well at least I proved my veracity

Well, I finished the Book of Boba Fett eventually. Binged through the last three episodes last night (which I admit were the best). I just feel like there’s a few niggles I could complain about, but in general, the story moved well and it was enjoyable.

Niggles blurred below:

Ashoka was supposed to be a Jedi since the Clone Wars or at least the second movie in the prequels… how is she not the master?
The rankor hands/arms in the final battle looks a bit rubbish in some scenes. I wonder if they used only CGI? It reminded me of some robotics from the 80s.
Mando struggles with the dark sabre… weird, does he need to use the force to wield it?
Are you telling me out of a whole spear they can only do a doll size chain mail shirt?

Today, more of Annual Required Training, Season 3. Annual Privacy Training makes surprisingly use of the subwoofer, but is otherwise a dud. lazy exposition in dialog, unbelievable characters, and generally low effort by the writers.

We had some generic “tick the box that you’ve done this so we don’t get sued for not telling you” training a little while back, and one of the sections was desk posture. They had some computer-animated models (about Poser 4 or 5 era I think). So as they were showing the close-up of “feet should be flat on the floor” there was the high-heeled shoe making it impossible… strangely they were not grateful for my feedback.

My employer is under a court order to do certain training around the usage of data. There are requirements that employees spend a certain amount of time on the training, and demonstrate that they absorbed the information. So these have video bits you have to watch, quizzes (if you change the question to “which answer was written by lawyers?”, you will get the right answer.), and some other things. I still have one more to do, I am sure it will be just as exciting.

I like the challenge of speeding through the material and still passing the test at the end. I despise the courses that make you spend a certain amount of time on (or click a certain number of things on) each slide.

I like the anti-bribary ones
“A supplier offers you free tickets for the FA Cup Final…”
The supplier (a) is vastly overestimating my ability to affect any decision making process and (b) also vastly overestimating my interest in watching football.

We also had an Ethics one
“You are in charge of a project to build a new office in the Middle East, you discover the builder is employing overseas workers and confiscating their passports. What should you do?” - Other than ask why you’ve put a programmer in charge of a building project you mean?

It has always felt to me that there is a difference between stuff the briber actually produces (e.g. if it were the FA Cup Final Organising Company, or they’re a car maker and they offer you a car), which is obviously going to cost them far less than its nominal cash value, and something outside that (they’re a car maker and they offer you the cup final tickets). Not an ethical difference, exactly, but…

Got very surprised by Netflix’ Rebel Ridge. The summary is “small-town cops push a marine too far” and you think you know what you’re getting, but that’s not it at all. REALLY tense and simmering, superbly shot and directed, by a guy who has more experience than a cinematographer than director. The US marine is an actor who’s actually from Brixton and who previously played Othello at the Globe. Don Johnson is the corrupt Sheriff. Wow, did not expect that to be such a solid movie, that was excellent.

On the plus side, that approach saved me a lot of time over the years. Whenever a show was getting raved about and sounded like my cup of tea, I’d add it to the list of things to get a box set of once it had finished. I figure in about 80% of cases my subsequent time investment was just “removing it from the list”, after the people watching it reported that it had been run into the ground.
