What are you spinning?

Looking for inspiration - I’m really enjoying film soundtracks at the moment. What are you favourites? Can either be instrumental (Gladiator, Lord of the Rings, Inception to name some favourites) or collection of songs such as Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction.

I really enjoyed the soundtrack to Braveheart. Had a great mix of music. Some builds tension. Some evokes action. Some is light and whimsical in feeling. Hmm, might need to dig that out. I haven’t listened to it in years.

Last of the Mohicans is one I go back to.

Then I found out the main from that came from a Loch Ness monster exhibition. I still go back to it but I feel a bit sillier than I did before.

I’m fond of Andrew Belling’s soundtrack for Ralph Bakshi’s Wizards, although it’s certainly not to everyone’s taste. Mostly instrumental.

I really like the joe hisaishi music from studio ghibli.

My favourite film soundtrack is for my favourite film; Terry Gilliam’s Brazil. If you don’t care for the film, then it might not appeal nearly so much; but if you like the film, it’s a superb album. Michael Kamen composed the score. There’s also a lovely rendition of the title song by Kate Bush which didn’t end up in the film itself, but is included on the album.

Lost Highway is another favourite. Its major flaw is the omission of Song to the Siren by This Mortal Coil, which is a gorgeous song that appears at key points in the film, so I find its omission quite inexplicable. The album is still excellent, however, if you enjoy louder music.

I haven’t listened to it in many years, but The Crow has another loud soundtrack that I always liked a lot.

Getting slightly stranger, Goblin’s music for the original Suspiria was always a hugely significant element of that film’s atmosphere, so that’s another “if you like the film, you’ll probably appreciate the soundtrack” case. Taken in isolation, I don’t actually like all of this album; but parts of it are absolutely iconic. (I had the pleasure of seeing a screening of Suspiria a few years ago with Goblin playing the soundtrack live; it was amazing. As attending this involved a flight, that was effectively the most expensive film I’ve ever seen, but I regret nothing : )

The films aren’t really my thing, but the soundtracks to Ready Player One and Guardians of the Galaxy are awesome.

And utterly random, but my best friend and I were reminiscing about the soundtrack for Gladiators (yes, the UK gameshow). It’s amazing.

Warning, I like musicals

The ones I have are

Suspiria - Goblin
Blade Runner - Vangelis
They Live - John Carpenter
*Complete Dollars Trilogy - Ennio Morricone

If I had to just chose one Dollars film soundtrack I’d easily go for A Few Dollars More.

The new(ish) Throwing Muses album. Really quite good and definitely getting a repeat listen tomorrow. Today’s listen was while cleaning the shower, so yay rock and roll lifestyle, me…

Normally I frown upon mashups but this one is two things I fully approve of and very well done.

Not at all my usual musical style, and while I know a bit of Daft Punk I don’t know Beastie Boys at all… but I like it!

Not exactly my thing but I already passed on the link to someone I know who might enjoy this

I’ve recently been listening to Amorphis, The Hu and Within Temptation.

I can take or leave Daft Punk, but got a lot of time and love for the Beastie Boys back catalogue. You should ch-check it out.

I tend to just listen to music during my commute, usually on Pandora. Lately I have been going between my Japanese station (Gackt, Hyde, L’arc, LiSA, Orange Range, Ayumi Hamasaki, Utada, Yoko Kanno, etc.) and my Nightwish station (Nightwish, Within Temptation, Delain, Birthday Massacre, etc.) This was only after long periods of 80’s station and one that started with Social Distortion but has more evolved into a Brian Fallon project station.
