hi! i new here, and wondering if anybody would be interested in an unmatched PBF game. I’m new to this, so it’ll be a learning experience
As the resident Unmatched fanatic, I would be interested. Due to the hidden info of player hands and decks, I believe a moderator would be required, though.
@COMaestro I might be able to moderate. It has been quite some time since I played so I’d need to relearn the rules myself! Any info or assets beyond those in the Unmatched Database (Unmatched Maker) that would be required for me to run it?
Only issue might be the board images. They are pretty small on there and don’t know how they will look if enlarged.
I have every board, so I could try scanning them if needed to see how that turns out.
like i said, I’m new and don’t know what I’m doing here. what should i be doing?
Well, since @Assussanni has been kind enough to volunteer to moderate a game, a lot of the weight is going to be on him. To start, I think we would need to pick our heroes and a board to play on. We can do a roll off or something to determine who goes first, and therefore on the ‘1’ space on the board.
It’ll be up to Assussanni to randomize our decks and give us our starting hands. Then we’d start. Maneuvers require a mandatory card draw, so he’d have to PM that to the active player before they decide where they are going to move, after which the board image will need to be updated.
Attacks will involve a PM to him with what card is being played to attack with, though once the attack has been declared, the defender can probably just post any card they defend with in the PbF thread, at which point either Assussanni or the attacker can post the attack card in the thread. The PM is just to keep the attacking player honest.
Schemes should be able to be posted in the thread with no issue.
Do you have a fighter in mind you would like to play as? As far as a board, I would suggest none of the Marvel boards, just to avoid needing to deal with the battlefield items, but everything else should be fair game.
cool! I think I’ll go with Beowulf. is king Solomens mines okay?
I’m fine with any map, so King Solomon’s Mines works for me.
I’ll try a fighter I have not played yet. I’ll go with Hamlet.
@Assussanni - this enough to get you started? Do you need any help with anything?
I think I’ve probably got everything I need and I’ve refreshed myself on the rules (and realised that the last time I played was sometime in 2021!).
For assets, The Unmatched Club seems to be a better site.
Board: King Solomon’s Mines (1337×742)
Beowulf cards: The Unmatched Club | Hero - Beowulf
Hamlet cards: The Unmatched Club | Hero - Hamlet
I think the only thing I’ll have to make is some hero and sidekick tokens for the map.
I’ll aim to have everything together tomorrow evening (UK time), hopefully aiming to start in about 24 hours or so.
@COMaestro 's explanation of play-by-forum was a good one, I’ll also post my own summary of how I think it will work before the game starts for @phinleep . You could also have a look at any of the other PBFs going on to get an idea, e.g. John Company PBF - Boardgames - tekeli.li forums, including unofficial SU&SD discussion or A War of Whispers PBF#1 - Boardgames / Play by Post - tekeli.li forums, including unofficial SU&SD discussion, if you haven’t already.
Welcome to the site! Please let me or another member of the moderation team know if you have any questions.
Enjoy!
P.S. feel free to browse about the place: we keep all the doors unlocked during regular operating hours. I can recommend “Oy!” “Wut?” Just chat (The Return of) for some random chitchat.
Firstly, rules links (if either of you need them):

Hamlet: UM-SaA-Set-Rules.pdf
King Solomon’s Mines: UM-HvG_Rules-two-page.pdf
For PBF, when you need to do anything that you would do in the physical game you post a message detailing what you want to do. In Unmatched I think there will be two occasions when this will occur:
- It’s your turn to take an action.
- You need to choose whether to defend against an attack.
For the three actions, you might post something like:
- “I’ll maneuver.” I’ll then send you a private message with your updated hand, then you make another post saying where your fighters are moving, e.g. “Beowulf moves to 3 and Wiglaf moves to 9” (I’ll number the spaces on the map, see my next post).
- “I’ll scheme, playing Golden Drinking Horn and spending 2 Rage to draw two cards and recover 2 health.” If anything requires my input, such as drawing cards, you may need to wait to take your next action. Otherwise you can continue with your next action or pass over to your opponent.
- “@ COMaestro Wiglaf attacks Hamlet.” (if you remove the space between @ and the name, it will notify that person that they have been mentioned). In the same private message thread as I send you your hand of cards you can message me the attack card that you are playing. Then the defender can publically post the card they are using to defend (or say it is undefended). Then attacker and defender may need to post if there are any choices to be made due to combat effects.
After your last action it’s probably helpful to say that it is the end of your turn, so that I know I can jump in and update everything and let your opponent know that it is their turn (or you can mention them yourself with @ if you prefer).
Hopefully that’s clear, and if not I’ll do my best to answer any questions.
Next post will be a draft example of how the board will look (comments welcome)…
Example post showing the game state:
phinleep 5 Cards in Hand, 25 Cards in Deck
Beowulf: 17/17 HP, 2 Move, Melee, Rage:
Wiglaf: 9/9 HP, Melee
Discard Pile (click to expand)
Cards that have been discarded go here. Collapsed by default to avoid clutter.
COMaestro 5 Cards in Hand, 25 Cards in Deck
Hamlet: 15/15 HP, 2 Move, Melee, (Not) To Be
Rozencrantz & Guildenstern: 6/6 HP, Melee
Discard Pile (click to expand)
Cards that have been discarded go here. Collapsed by default to avoid clutter.
You should be able to click on the board to make it bigger and allow you to zoom in (you may need to click on “Original Image”, which appears under the image once you’ve clicked on it once, to be able to zoom in). Any feedback on the board would be appreciated. e.g. Should the character tokens be smaller so that more of the zone circles are visible? Do the character tokens need a coloured ring around them to make them stand out more?
As mentioned previously, your hand of cards will be in a private message that I’ll send each of you that only you and I can see.
I aim to do the die roll for first player and message you your opening hands in two or three hours.
I think it may be helpful if the tokens were a bit smaller so the zones are visible. While nobody is ranged, there may be card effects which effect zones (I can’t remember for certain for these fighters). Otherwise it all looks good!
Great job, Assussanni!
(In best Bioware announcer voice) Welcome everybody, to the original Lost World, King Solomon’s Mines. And have we got a show for you tonight, a clash across time between Scandinavian royalty. In the red corner, the Avenging Son, it’s Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. And facing him in the blue corner, a man unfazed by revenge, it’s the Slayer of Grendel… Beowulf, King of the Geats. I want a good clean fight, no drownings, no poisoned weapons and no dragons. Fight!
And now to see if I can remember the roll syntax to see who goes first.
@Assussanni asked for a die roll:
Roll for first player: 1-3 is phinleep, 4-6 is COMaestro. d6: 6
Isn’t it roll xdx in square brackets?
Edit: Lol, beat me to it by a second!
Okay, as player 1, Hamlet starts on space 22, and I will put R&G on 24.
Setup:
@phinleep to let me know where you want to place Wiglaf, on a beige or grey space, then COMaestro to take the first turn.
Let me know if the board or icons need any more work.
wiglaf will start on space 21.
phinleep 5 Cards in Hand, 25 Cards in Deck
Beowulf: 17/17 HP, 2 Move, Melee, Rage:
Wiglaf: 9/9 HP, Melee
COMaestro 5 Cards in Hand, 25 Cards in Deck
Hamlet: 15/15 HP, 2 Move, Melee, (Not) To Be
Rozencrantz & Guildenstern: 6/6 HP, Melee
Discard piles not shown because they are empty. @COMaestro to have Hamlet answer the Question then take the first of your two actions.
