Topic of the Week: The Topic of the Week

Checking in. So we’ve hit close to 60 weeks here. Had some good chats. As alluded a month or so back, most of the ground from my initial brainstorm has been covered. Of course, there’s always more, and there’s always room for another brainstorm (or more input).

Two questions:

  • For you personally, is this something you still look forward to each week?
  • If there is a quorum, I’m happy to continue. If we do, what are your thoughts on keeping it 90% games based or maybe shifting more to 50/50 with more personal topics?

Cheers.

Absolutely.

I love being surprised by the topics. And, even more, I love hearing people say things I that I would never expect, but, often, ring true. It’s a great way to explore this community.

Normally, I would say “keep it mostly games based” but I feel like a lot of the topics that weren’t gaming-related were, perhaps, some of the most interesting.

I may not have been able to contribute to many of these discussions, but I do look forward to these threads and find them useful in helping me to discover new games, even if I know I’ll not get to play them for a good while (basically, until I have the time and opportunity to find or form a gaming group).

I’d suggest keeping the predominant focus on boardgames, or game-related at least, as there’s probably enough coverage of non-gaming matters in the Not Games section here already. Plus, say, if I want to read up on non-gaming matters, I’d probably go to a forum more tailored to those themes.

In search of other inspiration, perhaps a brainstorming thread would help. Following the BGG categorizations alone, there would be plenty of categories, mechanics and themes of games to spark discussions, or considering the range of expansions, components or accessories.

My answer should be obvious :innocent:

I’m looking forward to the different topics and discussions. Enough that I’ll jump in if there’s seems to be a break.

  1. Yes!
  2. Don’t mind, I’m liking it focused on games for now.

Still enjoying even if often not contributing. I’d prefer at least game-adjacent but I’m absolutely not saying that with a moderator hat on.

Even if I don’t actively participate it feels like part of the rhythm of my week. Equally things don’t need to carry on forever once you’ve started.

I’m happy with any topic.

I enjoy this series of posts and look forward to it each week. I find some topics I don’t really have anything to contribute, usually due to no exposure to the games/designers in question, but I still enjoy reading the answers.

I think keeping it mostly game related is best, but the occasional curve ball is welcome.

Alright, I’m brainstorming for another cycle! This is enough yesses that even if silence = no we have life.

Feel free to PM me any ideas and I’ll drop them in the hat (or merge as needed). For my part, just sitting down to think it through has led to some good thoughts.

I also look forward to these each week. I feel like I have less to contribute as time goes on but that’s to do with playing less and thinking about games less. New parent + new job does not = game brain.

I do find them a really nice vessel for seeing more about everyone who gets involved. I’m not particularly involved on other topic areas so this is nice and I like that it’s still game focussed.

I like it. Some topics interest me more than others, but that’s inevitable. I agree with those who say it should be game-related or at least game-adjacent. Game-connected, in some way, but I wouldn’t mind a bit if the connection was sometimes mighty tenuous or indirect.

But I wouldn’t want anyone to feel under pressure to produce a topic every single week; I’d be fine if there were some weeks without one, if one didn’t come to mind.

Thanks for that. Generally I make a list and every once in a while choose 10 or so that seem most interesting. The weekly lift is just posting one and so far no one has been grumbly if it’s Sunday night or Tuesday morning or anywhere in between : )

I only sometimes reply but I always read and would like to see it continued.

If every week is too much for one person, we could consider modifications. Every other week perhaps? Or passing the burden around among volunteers to do say a month at a time? Or having a topic of the week once every year or six months that is just suggestions for future topics?

I haven’t replied to all the topics (not even CLOSE), but I always enjoy finding out what they are. I think they should be wide open, too.

I like these threads and am very happy for them to continue, as long as you are happy to continue to do so.
