Topic of the Week: Outside! Do you go there?

I tend to overheat easily (and I’d rather have moving air than slightly cooler stuffy air), and I’m fortunate enough to live in a house with a gazebo left by the previous owner—so (especially now that I’ve added a weatherproofed gigabit ethernet socket) I tend to be out here for the working day at any temperature from 15°C up (sometimes lower). It’s not weatherproof, it’s open on three sides and the fourth iis the fence to the neighbours, but in moderate wind I stay dry. In sufficiently hot weather I’ve even slept out here.

I don’t do a lot of gaming out here, though, as there’s usually enough wind to pick up a card every so often. The odd solo thing.

I like going for walks too, and we have some pleasant mixed woods nearby (alas either a steep climb or a short drive away, nothing within a casual walk).

The next topic of the week: do you darkmode?

(I am all darkmode always, confused my older colleagues when I screenshared my IDE)

I really need to convince my dad to turn some of the lawn in the garden into a flower meadow. But I have made several attempts and got nowhere. I went so far to destroy the wire that keeps his mowing bot on the lawn… (accidentally, absolutely accidentally)… but he just repaired it and now the lawn is being lawned.

I like eating outside. But my partner not so much.

I forgot 2 important outside activities earlier:

  • BBQ (and soon pizza baking, we‘ll be getting that oven @Captbnut mentioned in August probably)
  • Metal festivals (although this year we‘re once again not going still due to late renovation upheavals and job hunt)

As for camping: I enjoyed it more when I was younger and my back had seen less desk-time. These days when we go to a festival we usually book the glamping option (huge tent setup for you, „beds“ (cardboard base and thin matrace but bed) and usually much closer to the out/in-field than we would normally be able to get being late arrivals at the campgrounds because… we have to work.

  • Do you go outside regularly?

Not as regularly as I ought to, but more so now that we have a campervan. Having a desk job means a lot of sitting indoors. Also, see below…

  • What is it like outside where you live?

Suburban hellscape. Our house is sandwiched between a dual carriageway and a railway line, and there was a big fire in the plastics factory over the road a few months ago. It is easy to get to some nice countryside though (Yorkshire Dales)

  • Any (fun) activities you (like) doing outside?

Gardening (obviously), walking, occasional cycling. Having foolishly agreed to do an 8.5 mile “fun” run in August, I also run outside but I don’t like that

  • Do you like games with the same themes as the stuff you are doing outside?

I do like a good nature or gardening themed game. Also, Flamme Rouge :biking_woman:

  • What‘s your favorite game with a „doing stuff outside“ theme?

Flamme Rouge, followed by Arboretum

  • Do you farm/garden/houseplant?

Yes

  • What do you think of the magical multiplication of sheep as introduced by Agricola?

That’s how sheep work isn’t it?

As mentioned above, having a dog gets us out every day. We have a park nearby which is the standard destination but there are some beautiful walks in Cardiff; the barrage, Roath Park and the reservoir being top of the list.

I’ve given up trying to run, my body is too shit. Rowing machine instead.

We’re lucky enough to live near some good beaches; my first glimpse of the sea every year is a massive mental health boost. Being on a SUP on the river is so peaceful, although my first choice is always bodyboarding in the waves. Need to learn to surf.

We’ve got a nice back garden, and built a gazebo a couple of years ago which has been a godsend. We’re out with the pizza oven in all weathers. The barbecue gets a fair amount of use (although the weather has been rubbish this summer). I do enjoy our smoker as well.

I hate gardening!

We’ve gamed a bit outside; Carrom mostly but other things where the components won’t blow away.

El Grande counts as an ‘outside’ theme right?
