Same as last time: Brass, Sagrada, Skull, Pax Pamir. I don’t think I’d played Beyond the Sun, Antiquity, Oath, or Railroad Ink Challenge last time, so Sidereal Confluence is the only riser.
Root was number 10. I’ve played it a bit more recently, but I would really like to play more with people who know what they’re doing and are enthusiastic to play, rather than teaching it to new players every time/playing with people who are doing me a favour
My top 9, based largely on how much of a hit they were with my girlfriend, who in covid times is the only person I’ve been able to play boardgames with!
Also Viticulture and Obsession, because they are absolutely my thing.
I finally played Dune Imperium and wanted to post on it, but my first reaction was “this is a lot like Inis.” So I like seeing it next to Pamir and Inis.
I’m not sure where it lands for me yet but really liked it.
I think my list is largely in line with last year. Not enough table plays to effect pressure on my existing opinions. Big changes are the skyrocket of Keyflower, the (slight) deprecation of Innovation, and the advent of Hansa Teutonica in the honorable mentions. But mostly, unless you’re on BGA or have a lifelike solo mode, I haven’t had a chance to (re)assess you.
Tigris & Euphrates
Keyflower
Race for the Galaxy
Tichu
Isle of Skye
Agricola
Innovation
Cyclades (haven’t had a good crack at Inis or Kemet B&S yet)
El Grande
Memoir '44
And my other 9’s and 10’s, in alphabetical order:
Air, Land, & Sea
Babylonia
Castles of Burgundy
Concordia
Coup
Flamme Rouge
Gaia Project
Great Western Trail
Hansa Teutonica (this is destined for top 10, I believe)
#10 would be Tigers and Pots, because I’ve just not had any chances to play it since the digital implementation went kaput and I don’t have a copy. Been playing more Y & Y digitally to get my fix.
Carcassonne H&G became an obsession this year with the strategic variant. It just hits all the happy spots in my brain, and the BGA implementation is great.
Troyes & Rallyman GT both hopped on here due to BGA, though I’ve gotten to play Troyes in-person since.
I recently got my first two games of Brass Birmingham in, and I feel like playing that more this year is going to knock something off here.
I could just use the copy of Twilight Imperium to rip a hole in space-time, travel back to a point before my house burned down, and save the rest of my collection.
Lots and lots of Beyond the Sun in the current Top 10s. I really hope it has the staying power
I really really need to get Modern Art to the table. Waiting for my preorder of Art Decko to arrive for an evening of Canvas, Art Decko and Modern Art–and I know just the artist whom I’ll invite over.
Art Decko is on my ‘want to play’ list. I like the concept but after the wishlist cull it’s no longer there. Again it’s a game that does something different.
I am impressed about how Everdell sticks to my mind as better than all the rest. Or how Root holds on to the list. Big drop outs are Oceans (and I play it loads on the phone app) and London 2nd Ed. I guess not being played irl does take a toll.
Also, new to me is Viticulture. I can see it climbing higher.
The appropriately titled reigning champ Champions of Midgard continues to be a font of good times.
Had my best friend over for a couple days before Christmas and had a whale of a time with Cloudspire, really not that complicated once you get into it (my wife’s least favourite phrase).
To be fair I haven’t played a ton of a few of those but the times I did play them where just cracking good games.
Castles of Burgundy is a newcomer we’ll have to see if the honeymoon period lasts.
Number 10 is the Kings Dilemma which was a great experience.
