The resurrected miniatures painting and showing off thread

And now a Hac Tao joins the ranks.

Pheasant done. I’m part way through a Crane and have built and undercoated my Guijia. That’s the last of my Yu Jing currently owned. Ordered 4 more, however that may well be the last of it and will complete the Yu Jing project. I hope the delay won’t be too long on the delivery as I have plenty of time currently and it’d be nice to put it to bed.

Mostly finished these wraithblades for my iyanden eldar. So far been able to keep the momentum going and managed to get a fair bit done to at least a game ready WIP standard

Chucked some contrast paints on these dire avengers in a wee quick last half an hour or so at the end of my painting tonight too

Some KGL hussars freshly painted and based.

Having just painted some blue uniforms, I’m hoping I won’t get too tried of it in the near future - I’ll be turning my attention to French infantry next.

This is painting related, I promise. The official start to Spring in my house is marked by the first Wood Shop project. My daughter and I worked on this one together, with the rules being that we had to design, build and install in one day, and had to use materials on hand, with no running to the home center.

A few years ago I built a Giant American Gaming Table, partially in defiance of Quinns pooh-poohing them in a review. Each year, I make some sort of insert for it. (Last year was a 36" diameter turntable.).

This year, it is a painting station, designed to wrangle all of our tools and supplies, but also provide some semi-visible storage for the Pile of Shame. We’re quite happy with the result, and have a few modifications to possibly work in down the road.

From the top down we have:
The tabletop.

Remove that and there’s a playing surface.

Under which is the painting station.

Inside of which is the tool storage.

All sitting next to the Vault of Shame, currently mostly stocked with Steamforged Games Epic Encounter minis.

Breaking in the new painting station by finally getting back to work on Big Blue. He’s got a lot more bits than I’m used to, and a lot of them are pointy. Still just blocking out colors, but I’m having fun messing around with contrast paints over metallics, high contrast dry brushing and other questionable tactics.

Practicing some drybrushing with make-up brushes on the kraken mini from one of the Abyss expansions

I primed, assembled, and have (barely) started painting all the Shasvastii from the Infinity: Defiance board game.

Goal is to have everything painted by the end of the month, although it will be tricky with final exams and a novel release coming up. But gonna try.

I never liked Shasvastii models. I still don’t. Although I have now accidentally collected an army-and-a-half of them as a side-effect to getting Defiance. Ah well. They’re fine, just not my style.

That’s looking really good. Make-up brushes are one of those great hobby hacks - a lot cheaper than hobby brushes, but just as good (if not sometimes better)

Got some shields to finish before the rest of my Vikings are done, but this one is ready to share.

Still taking baby steps on this giant. Every time I think I’ve based all the swords and axes stuck on this guy, I find another one.
Prepping for some makeup brush fun on the big axe in the near future.

Based this guy. Now I stare at it, terrified of messing it up.

The last mansions of madness expansion that I was missing finally came back into stock. All speed painted up and ready for some tentacle fun.

Celestial Guard Monitor painted. This is from the last tranche of Yu Jing. My painting hiatus has really slowed the process down. Stupid Long Covid

The weather is nice again, so painting season is back on. I’m going to tackle my heroes for Aristeia!, do you Infinity guys have any tips with this 28mm scale? Wow they feel teeny weeny!

[EDIT] Hmm, I guess it’s just perception then, the Kill Team stuff was 28mm too. For some reason the details seem just a bit smaller here. (Tips still welcome, gonna need to be clean here).

Infinity tips (from an amateur!):

  • Careful with facing on the bases
  • Pick a sustainable basing plan
  • Thin thin thin primer and paint
  • Airbrush any small areas that really need smooth transitions of an alternate colour and masking fluid them. (Eg contrasting cloak)
  • Airbrush your largest areas of colour/shade/highlight and make that most of the mini. (Eg armour colour)
  • Black out the other areas with brush and work up the highlights/nmm
  • black line the hell out of everything
  • Edge highlight with tasteful restraint

I’ll echo the lining sentiment.

I’ve taken to replacing black with an appropriate dark colour but the principal is the same. Sharp edge highlights are great on armour plates but be careful on any cloth type surfaces.
