I’m just realizing Pitch & Plakks ends only a few days apart from Rallyman. Two big European releases that close together is not in my budget. Dropping my Dirt pledge to a buck for now, may even just wait for retail given their posted strategy.
Despite absolutely and definitely not backing anything else this year I find myself backing Terra Oblivion , an RPG Kickstarter from Jerry D. Grayson. It’s described as a “…pre-apocalyptic game of eco-espionage, set on a world slowly being killed by humanity’s need to consume”, which is sufficiently far from the dark and morally bankrupt fare making up most of the RPG market these days for me to be interested. Beautiful art too. Note that it is a setting supplement for Mythic D6 rather than a standalone game.
Five days to go on this one.
Oooohhhh I’ll research on this one. I love backing RPGs that I dont get to play!
I haven’t checked shipping yet, but this sounds totally my kind of game!
Area control, but with moving tiles! (@yashima)
Sounds like an expensive hobby.
$12 to the UK.
A cheap Kickstarter
My desire for things to be well-aligned would conflict with the unsteadiness of my hands… this game looks like nightmare fuel for me… sliding tiles around without some sort of grid system to keep things square…
Tokyo Metro expansion is tempting me. As an expansion to a game I play regularly and enjoy lots it should be worth it.
My partner and I played Ascension for a good three years until we finally got our fill. This… ends up being highly tempting:
I stumbled across this one while browsing reddit. It just launched. Unfortunately, I just don’t see a solid game here and it’s by, what appears to be, an unproven team. Nevertheless, the art design is solid and I feel justifies a second look.
(Also, let’s not forget there are 2 other games due out this year also using the “Baker Street Irregulars” name; a new SHCD and the Van Ryder Games asymmetric co-op game)
But someone was already using The Originals, so then we were The New Originals…
I just want ONE good dinosaur game, alright?! Just one! Is that too much to ask??? Stop ruining it.
Perseverance: Castaway Chronicles by Mindclash Games — Kickstarter
I backed Dead Reckoning, the new pirate themed “card crafting” game. My husband, Joe, is really into the the entire card crafting line. I’m more Mystic Vale is good and Edge of Darkness is a bit too fiddly and bogs down but is ok enough I guess. Hopefully they’ve worked out some of those kinks for trying to build a more complex game out of the card crafting system here.
I’m a huge Sherlock Holmes fan so I wish that game looked better but, nah Especially not with having backed Dead Reckoning today.
On the fence about Perseverance. Joe and I love Mindclash’s Trickerion and quite like Anachrony so I’m inclined to give anything of theirs solid consideration. But I’ve already got a lot of big strategy games and not enough time to play them all and backed one over $100 KS already today. Will probably see what Joe thinks when he gets home from work.
I remember reading once that some supposed crowdfunding guru years ago said the best day to launch a campaign was a Tuesday so now we get dozens of expensive board game Kickstarters all launching on the same day all the time.
Yeah, I like Mindclash and the concept seems more appealing than, say, Petersen Games mostly reskinning Planet Apocalypse as dinos invading WWII, or the dino park games so far. But I haven’t exactly had a lot of chances to play Trickerion or Anachrony and it’s expensive and I would tend to prefer to stick mostly to my sweet spot (narrative coops, particularly campaign ones) as space is limited and I have more competitive games than I really need already.
Well I’ve been pulled into Riot Quest. I don’t need another brawler, but I just can’t get past the desire factor. Going in on the original and new starter sets for now. This (and Rallyman) effectively replaces the cost of my Pitch & Plakks pledge, so that’s gonna have to be it.
Yeah, I’m extremely tempted by this. I’ll probably back it, despite not need another skirmish game…at all, lol.
I really like what I’ve seen of the mix of skirmish game and deck builder. The way you “activate” your heroes, and upgrade/level them up. Seems promising.
They’ve said standard games are about 45-75 minutes once you know the game, which I think sounds reasonable, and puts it at a length I can see helping it get to the table.
I will say that the board is hideous, and if I grab it and it sees a lot of play, I will consider ordering a custom neoprene mat with even a touch of flavour, lol.
Why? What pushes you away from this one?
I’m highly tempted, especially as it’s actually less expensive than I expected, given its basically two games (yes, I’m being serious).
My only concern really, is I worry that MCG games will always be a tad heavy for us.
Why did you mention this?? Why would you do that???
You know I have a problem!!!
I’ve actually been eyeing the game for awhile, but never took the plunge. I’ll have to check this one out now too…
Edit: As an FYI, 401 Games has the original starter for $52. I’m not sure if that would work out better, as I haven’t looked deep at the pledges. Might not make a difference in the end, if you get extra content at that pledge level.
Anyways, thought it worth a mention.
Yeah thanks for the heads up - I did notice that just today. I thought I missed out on domestic stock entirely when it first showed up but I guess there’s more trickling in after all. I still think I’ll stick to the Kickstarter though, gives me a few months to sort out which of my skirmish games (if any) need to go.
I am getting pickier these days (space is becoming a limitation and I don’t feel I’ve played enough of my games to warrant a culling), but the dinosaurs don’t seem to be much more than a placeholder. A thing that does a few points of damage unless it’s defended against. By that notion it could be zombies or aliens or anything. I’d like a mechanical reason for it being dinosaurs specifically that gives it a bit of personality.
I’m also not sure how well the whole thing will work together. It has a lot of completely different mechanical components. It could all feel amazing to play or it could feel really bland, I can’t call it. But that’s a general issue of euros on KS, and MC games in particular.
I think I’ll read the rulebook out of curiosity. It almost looks like a medium euro version of Champions of Midgard (in the sense of building things up to defend) and that’s intriguing at least. I’m sure it’ll have heavy undertones, but compared to most their fare this looks a bit more medium weight.
That’s completely fair! I was genuinely curious as to your thoughts on it and why, hope it didn’t come off as a criticism of you possibly not liking it!
The comparison to Champions of Midgard crossed my mind as well. I enjoy that game a lot, but the swingyness (not a word, lol) can be frustrating. I’ve heard Valhalla fixes that mostly, but also makes the game longer. I’m not sure if I want to play a longer version of CoM, or a different game with some similar ideas.
As far as the weight, I’ve heard Episode 1 is lighter than Anachrony, and is actually MCG’s “lightest” game, though it’s still a solid mid-weight. If it was as heavy as Trickerion is supposed to be, I’d probably pass.
I do agree that the theme could be anything really; stranded on a _____, being attacked by _____. That said, I do enjoy the production and theme as they’ve done it.
As far as a better Dino game, I’ve heard Dinogenics is actually quite solid, though a fair bit lighter. I’m considering watching for a copy when the last reprint releases.
