The Crowdfunding Thread

It’s here. For context, the expansion box is the same size as Fast Sloths. The main game weighs a ton

Got the dispatch email so should be here this week

The Canvas team have a new game (which will come to Kickstarter since all theirs do).

Pop Art” has you layering an image, colour (and I guess win condition?) to make a card, and then placing it in a 3x3 grid where the positioning earns points based on the win condition.

Keep in mind that Asmadi screwed us on the Innovation Ultimate campaign. But this sounds cool if/when it shows up on retail

Asmadi didn’t screw me on the Innovation Ultimate campaign…

I’m still smarting from the 80% markup I paid and the half empty box.

Thought process:

Oh, it’s like Tumbling Dice but far more portable.

If you’re going to use dice, a d12 fits the witchy theme (pentagons are close enough to pentagrams) and they probably have a better degree of rollability than d6s.

If it’s curling, why not use discs? Dice are cooler, I guess.

But wait, those are regular d12s numbered 1-12. That’s a CRAZY spread. A bit of randomness is fine in a flicking game, but a single score of 12 on the fifth-most outer die is better than having a die (showing 1-10) on the button. Oh wait, that’s not how scoring works. Nevermind.

Forgot to include this in the list. Artistry is now mine. The fact that the theme of the game is Art Noveau is a complete coincidence

Gah! They’re doing a Gamefound campaign for Ikusa (aka. Samurai Swords, aka Shogun). I didn’t play this one more than once, I think, compared to the dozens of plays of Axis & Allies games, and a fair number of plays of Fortress America. And I own the latter two.

It’s tempting to finish off the MB GameMaster series, but not sure it’d be worth it. Costs $150 (and $15 shipping) and I haven’t played either of the other two in many years. Feel that this would just sit on the shelf.

I’d like to talk about https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/astridamia/djam-a-die-for-all-dices

  1. “dJam” is a stupid name.
  2. It’s a deltoidal hexecontahedron (took me a bit to find it) but do they mention this anywhere? No.
  3. The “dJam” is supposed to work as a d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20 and d30. BUT…
    1. They don’t tell you how to read the sides.
    2. It doesn’t work for a d8. 60 sides is not divisible by 8.
  4. I like base-60 stuff. See my handle.
  5. It is only available in the EU.
    1. Not the UK.
    2. Not the US (where I am).
  6. If they did ship to the US, it would cost much more than I would want to pay.
    1. But at €30 including shipping, I’d absolutely get one.
      1. Well, except maybe for the d8 thing. That annoys me.

Also, is it wrong to want a $580 set of dice?

At least the US shipping is reasonable (for this day and age).

I’ve seen 24-siders (can’t remember the proper name, a cube with a shallow pyramid built onto each face) marked up as 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24.

Reminds me of the old Gamescience D-Total:

In practice, none of these things are as convenient as individual dice.

I am tempted by the new Snowdonia… and its accompanying Grand Tour expansion…

I sold my old Snowdonia in one of my occasional purging frenzies, but I sometimes miss it. And this looks prettier, and all the railways have their own boards

Starting to be tempted by the Terra Mystica gamefound campaign. The main thing for me is the customisable map which may make the game a bit more interactive at 2 players. Has anyone ever used a smaller custom map for 2-3 players?

I know the answer to this, but I have to rant in the form of a question anyway.
Every week or so (depending on how bored I am), I will go to Kickstarter, filter on Games > Tabletop Games (and then sort by either Newest or Ending Date, depending, but that’s irrelevant to my rant). Why are STL pin-ups that have nothing to do with tabletop gaming in this category?

I get it. There is a spectrum between STL files of game accessories and dice towers, to miniatures you’d use in a game, and stuff you’ll just print and put on a shelf, but there has to be a line at some point where this stuff is put under gaming.

I’m guessing project runners pick their own categories. So what it comes down to may be “this is the category in which they think they’ll make most money”.

I argue STL files don’t need Kickstarter. It’s just lazy marketing.

I don’t disagree but Kickstarter is marketing nowadays. How many eyeballs can you get on your Etsy shop compared to Kickstarter? For many creators, Kickstarter a pre-order system in all but name.

It’s been going on for years and they’ve not done anything about it. As the barrier to producing these type of things is so low, more and more of them turn up.
