I think the prices were about the same; slightly cheaper, perhaps, but not by half. I bought the €85 version, which at the time was about $97. That pledge wasn’t available in the reprint, but you could get the same one + the castle miniatures for $95, which was €95 in the previous campaign.
That’s interesting. I remember it being $180 the first time around, or somewhere between 150 and 200 - then getting it for 120 the second time. Now that I say that out loud I can see the percentages there…
Edit: the glory of the internet can reveal that, as you said, prices were almost exactly the same the two times around.
Despite being an adult with disposable income, I couldn’t help being a little bit sad when I decided I wasn’t going to back this.
Are they aware that π has been calculated already?
What don’t I understand about maths which could make this a remotely reasonable use of anyone’s money?
If I launch a campaign saying “I’m going to calculate π on my sofa. Literally. For half the price of that Moon project!” will people give me money??
Will be able to use your sensors and move you around?
I pledge to calculate π in a superior way which does not necessitate such flawed elements.
I can’t tell if this is in a serious or jesting tone.
This channel celebrates (American) Pi day each year by calculating π in a different way. Sometimes massively inefficient ways. Sometimes ways that yield π = 3.2
or some other farcical result.
I applied and got accepted to help out with last year’s attempt but couldn’t make the dates work in the end.
Three plus days of long division is not quite as attractive as THE MOON!
I see. I guess it just seems like too much money to be spending on a joke, and most of my brain wishes it was going to almost any other endeavour. Or maybe there’s more to it and there’s some actual benefit? I didn’t watch much of the video.
I went ahead and backed the War of Whispers: Expansion of Influence KS. I really enjoy the game and think the additions to this may help balance things out. Now if I can just get it to the table once it arrives…
I’m also going to back the Legacy Nemed expansion for Inis, as again, I really enjoy the game and this is the only opportunity to get a version that matches what I already own, short of trying to pick it up secondhand later.
I mean, I would say this is as close as you can get to marketing Math(s).
In this world, advocating for STEM subjects is so important. If this project inspires just a small number of people, it’s probably worth the economic waste
That said, I do agree that it’s a little misguided and I wish, instead, it was an equally successful crowdfunding campaign to offer STEM scholarships to students who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to study math or science.
The money is apparently mostly going to:
-
pay people to check he isn’t injecting malicious or accidentally harmful code
-
pay for the cost(?) of transmitting the pointless data back from the moon
Now, while those are both pointless expenses, the computing power is apparently going spare and wouldn’t otherwise be used. In today’s attention economy, the additional attention presumably has some value for the program. The people throwing their money at this presumably don’t have anything better to spend their money on, and are free to do so.
It seems… fine? Doesn’t make much sense to me, but I also can’t really muster any objection.
With NZ$ 642,920 pledged of NZ$ 168,696 goal, and 25 days to go, maybe they’ll allocate the excess money towards a good cause like that.
So tempted, but the bundle + shipping and taxes to the UK is just too much for my wallet right now.
What did folks think of the base game now more have played it?
Still in favour, but I want to get it to an actual table too.
I backed Catacombs Alpha. I just love the idea of Catacombs. Seemed a smaller way to keep a finger in the possibility of playing it.
STILL waffling on Agricola. Sheesh. I like the idea of having ABCDE but cheaper to get that via Revised and expansions. Getting the G deck would be great, but it’s specifically meant to mix with EIK which this campaign doesn’t have (yet?). The other decks would make me happy to have, but my honest assessment is I’m unlikely to play with anything beyond (some combination of) EIKGWmFr and ABCDE.
Now the irrigation expansion… that’s also the sort of thing I probably want to try but don’t need permanent access to.
Waffle waffle waffle.
I have been generally good at not backing things this year.
- I refrained from Maglev Metro Expansion Maps. (going to try to snap those up at retail when it hits, but act faster this time)
- I refrained from Excalibur. Roxley does nice enough retail editions also the Skyrise special edition was easily available for a good while. But it sure looks exciting.
But…
- Nemed (Inis expansion) got me. I doubt the legacy expansion will be made available again and it will probably be a hassle to snap up a copy at retail after the campaign delivers. They agreed to change the front art to match my older edition. Even if I never play my game again, having this expansion will easily double the value of my game. Also I love having Inis even if playing it remains aspirational at this point in my life.
- Agricola. I have never owned my own copy of the game. This seems like a good point to jump in. Wood edition. The irrigation board looks so tasty. I can‘t help it. Could probably wait for retail. Could. But I didn‘t.
Oh well. I think I am still doing good compared to pandemic years. Currently I have 8 backed campaigns. 4 of which were this year (Casinopolis & Neon Hope are the other two). The other four (Earthborne Rangers expansion, 20 Strong Fairytale Decks, Oath Expansion, Leviathan Wilds) should be delivering sometime … soonish?
I have received Ministry of Lost Things. I will soon get into the PostCurious stuff. I also need to finish Sherlock Holmes too…
Allplay playmat received. And the Allplay small bag is awesome!! Been using it whenever I go on games nights. Smaller than most bag, including their large one, yet it has enough storage to put in 3 TTR size box.
Haven’t backed anything this year. Retail is just too good of an option. The backlog still exist mainly because they are a bunch of slowpokes.
Ra Acrylic
Merchants of Andromeda, Waddle and Soda Smugglers
18SVEA probably the most delayed.
