The Crowdfunding Thread

Mojito really bungled pueblo. This would be a big reason not to back imo.

I was inclined to agree with you.
But then I looked at the crowdfunding section of BGG and right now I see:

  • Madcala 2.000 backers for a small 2 player Mancala game in the Wonderlands War design
  • Nature 6.000 backers for the latest Evolution game
  • Cloudspire whatever 5.800 backers for whatever Chip Theory makes
  • Speakeasy 8.000 backers for the new Lacerda
  • Above & Below Haunted almost 3.000 backers for the new Ryan Laukat
  • More Root has 14.000 backers

And a lot of <500 backers games.
I think what is happening might be that the guys that got big with crowdfunding will still draw the crowds. Crowdfunding isnt dead. Itā€˜s just that now the barrier to entry it was supposed to removeā€¦ has returned. I cant quite tell you what form that takesā€¦ but I guess itā€˜s just name recognition.

Itā€˜s definitely a far more difficult market.

And I think for many people money is more tight and that may not mean no more games but less risky investments. Preferably guaranteed fun times as promised by reprints and expansions and maybe the occasional high profile review. The 5.000 preview channels are just money-sinks for publishers in my opinion. I have never once watched one of those videos.

For myself: I backed far fewer campaigns this year: and none of those are small indie things. Some are expansions to games that wouldnā€˜t exist without crowdfunding. Some are reprintsā€¦ ā€¦ the smallest campaign I backed was Hispania, the follow-up to Tetrarchia.

I agree. Thatā€™s a much nicer way of putting it.

I do suspect that the tastes of a lot of old farts will have moved with the times a bit. They wonā€™t want their games beige and shoddy looking nowadays - any more than theyā€™ll still wear enormous shapeless jeans and shirts!

I have never heard of any of the games you linked, FWIW, and I do a lot of boardgame crowdfunding. Maybe Restart? I think I am confusing it with other similar names though.

I think I backed less but that is largely due to my shelves filling up and having a lot of campaigns I havenā€™t started. I still backed more than make any sense to.

Sorry. I hang out with the OG Guild and they seem to miss that these games are/were not marketed to them. They happenstance to end up liking these. They have the right to complain tho, which they do.

The new super duper lots of plastic mega legend Tikal edition has a Kickstarter now. And this is what caught my eye on the page:

hereā€™s the actual link if anyone wants to spend ā‚¬149 for the deluxe version:

Itā€™s an interesting tonal shift there, from ā€˜David Turcziā€™ to ā€˜David Turczi and his teamā€™.

Nope. Possessive. David Turcziā€™s team. Meaning he doesnā€™t even need to be there in the entire process. His team can do the whole thing.

I am very curious to see if it strikes you the same way it did meā€”when I played this my opponent (Opposition) completely ignored the battle in the states and went all-out on preventing Congress from passing the amendment in the first place, which led to a pretty easy victory.

I agree. When Iā€™ve played it I feel like the balancing was a bit compromised to better convey the history that comes with the theme. But so much of the heavy lifting is done by the theme that I couldnā€™t grumble too much.

New Cthulhu: Death May Die campaign about to drop. Be prepared for US customers to lose their shit because they havenā€™t gotten their last pledges yet (despite it being available from retailers). I understand their frustration. I havenā€™t had mine delivered yet either (in Australia)ā€¦

Did not expect more C:DMD so soon. I love the game, but not sure I want or need any more of it, for a while at least.

Trick Takers and Climbers. Notably Tricky Time Crisis expandalone and a reprint of the OG. Not too fussed about the rest.
