The Crowdfunding Thread

Re: Planet Unknown
Read the rules for supermoon and it looks utterly forgettable. I do want the extra corporations and planets, but they are the same price NOW through the website. I forgot about the lid! Maybe I would have gotten a lid if I’d bought the extras through the campaign? Reads like no, but maybe.

Re: Cyclades
Finally decided I do want this despite all my grumbling. But it’s $150 US. Back to nope.

Punnery sergeant earning his stripes!

Re: John Company
I also jumped on the bandwagon way late when I found a copy for $94 on BGG. It is now the most complicated game I own. I now have JoCo, Indonesia (pre-order), Archipelago, and Sidereal Confluence for this “ambiguously competitive economic heavyweight” category and have played none of them. I want to play them and hope I like them. Probably just keep buying until I finally play one.

Another reason to love Asmadi and Innovation (topical with recent posts):

Thoughts on the Innovation Ultimate campaign?

I’m hesitant about the Junk keyword… I’m used to Returning things instead and the layer of creating speed bumps for someone who was depending on an empty age deck, or the caution of what I’m giving someone else to draw. I don’t know how widely the word is used - the two examples are Archery which could trigger quite frequently and Steam Engine which would be a rare effect (as worded).

I’m also curious about the box size?

Looks like Ultimate is on Alpha on BGA, link to sign up is at the bottom of the campaign:

Im fine it. I am prefering to incorporate expansions from my games of it now.

I’ve not played the alpha, but I’ve not heard any complaints about it from the people I know who have used it

I love Innovation but lordy that is expensive when you include shipping and taxes. Especially as we own it already.

Where do you see about adding tax? I also assumed UK is lumped in with EU costs but it could be rest of world.

I’m currently undecided. It may well be great and a sleek refinement. That being said I’ve only played twice so the cost may be prohibitive. I do love Mottainai though so maybe another Chudyk par excellence is in order in my life but do I need double Innovation. I think Asmadi don’t seem to do bad jobs with any of their Chudyk releases so I’d guess the refinements won’t stop the game being a good experience.

My last couple of Kickstarters have had VAT added after ordering, whether it’s mentioned in the campaign or not

Interesting, I had the exact opposite reaction. It’s roughly 100€ with shipping and VAT to the EU. That’s about what you would pay for 3e base game + expansions years after release. Here you get all of that plus a fifth expansion, all in one box. Seems very reasonable to me.

Yes. The eMail came just at the right moment  I know I have my traded copy that I am not playing, but I must have this and maybe one day when things calm down… I’ll find someone other than my partner to play with…

Mottainai and Innovation are siblings the way Jacob and Esau are siblings.

They share the trait that they are compact games with a huge play space. But Innovation is about punching each other in the face as your game engines wildly spin off the rails. The SU&SD text review pretty much nails it.

Base Innovation is excellent. If you don’t already love it, I’d buy that instead of going Ultimate.

Mottainai and Glory to Rome are the sibling titles that are way similar as a way to circumvent the reprint issues of GTR

My couple of plays of ultimate innovation without expansions indicated that it seems designed to push through to later ages more often, and I’m not sure I liked that.

Probably just the usual fear of change, having a well-loved favourite meddled with, but I’m not feeling any pressing need to own it.

(Mottainai is Glory to Rome in under 20 minutes and only for two player (technically 3, but eh), so I think it finds its own niche out of GtRs shadow)

On the other hand, I do now have all the money from my new job, and what is crowdfunding if not supporting your favourite designers?

I own Innovation 3rd ed and all the expansions. Still played base game only twice and never an expansion.

I think what I was thinking about was the way Asmadi know what’s what when it come to Chudyk card games so I should trust that the changes still result in a fun playable game even if it’s a change to the game as it stands. Rather than a suggestion that Mottainai and Innovation are directly comparable games.

For me it all being in one box is very appealing. I almost wonder if it was all unsleeved if both editions could fit in the one box. I’m desirous of the thing but as I have less game time I’m unsure of the efficacy of me buying the game a second time given the lack of familiarity with the edition I currently have

Horror on the Orient Express: the board game. Crowdfunding next year. Designers are Michał Gołąb Gołębiowski (Destinies, Jetpack Joyride) and Adam Kwapiński (Nemesis, Lords of Hellas, Terracotta Army).

New Chaosium is all about extracting as much money as possible from a small amount of actual creativity that they hire in for piecework, but they’re not alone in this. The designers haven’t worked together before but Kwapiński at least has experience of huge overproduced Kickstarter games.

Slightly off-topic in that it’s a TTRPG not a boardgame, but I couldn’t see a crowdfunding thread for rpgs:

Has anyone played Shadow of the Demon Lord? Someone who GMs a lot called it “the best system out there”, and the company are now Kickstarting Shadow of the Weird Wizard which

a) has improvements and fine-tuning, and
b) is family-friendly

(because the KS page itself admits that Demon Lord was dark, and “Evil Dead meets Diablo is not for everyone!”)

Anyone know if it’s a good system? Seems to be a lot of respect out there for the designer.
