The Crowdfunding Thread

I have backed a couple of campaigns on Backerkit directly, most notably Daybreak. So far no complaints. But also haven’t received any games yet. Daybreak was one fo the first campaigns on there and they are still on time as far as I am aware.

As @RogerBW said: they were already doing the hard part.

As an aside: I am still trying to back fewer campaigns but recently there has been a number of interesting games that I jumped on. Notably Witchcraft (gamefound), Solo-haven (backerkit), Firefly (gamefound), Supermoon (gamefound), Clank! Legacy 2 (kickstarter)

So crowdfunding seems to have diversified and I don’t mind at all.

I noticed the same thing. I might have backed it at 2 players but don’t need it if solo only. It’s still only a might at 2, so since the information from the creators is hopefully the more accurate and says solo only, I’m going to pass.

It’s for a second edition yes, but also a Gloomhaven RPG and the insane mini boxes for both Gloomhaven and Frosthaven. (Also a discounted reprint of Frosthaven). if I had to guess I would bet a lot of that 2 million is for the minis.

It is also way too much unrelated stuff in one project IMO, and that and it being on a crowdfunding platform that just launched less than a year ago and has seen maybe four or five projects of any significance are probably why it’s only 2 millionish.

I hadn’t even looked at those numbers. US$3M+ with 15,753 backers spending about US$200 on average.

Not Crowdfunding per se (because reasons…) but Mythic have been sending out an enormous number of emails trying to sell their back catalogue.

The only crowdfunding that I take part in is through established publisher programs like GMT’s P500 program, or The Dietz Foundation’s pledge system. I don’t use third party sites like Kickstarter or Indiegogo because I have concerns about backer protection. This story highlights a recent horror story Kickstarter board game campaign. Eh. There are no backer protections to speak of, absolutely know that going in. But these are often established publishers, so the risk factor isn’t really much different from in house programs from an established publisher. I think the key thing with P500 is you haven’t actually given them your money, not that GMT has been around.

Correct. No money changes hands in P500 or Dietz pledges until the production process has completed and the finished product is ready to ship. Both transmit the payment receipt and shipping notice simultaneously. It instills trust in me. Conversely, independent crowdfunding does not instill such trust.

I feel like anyone who wanted a gloomhaven would have got their fill by now with some cheap Amazon prime day offering. It’s the continued steam of the thing that shocks me. In particular because before five or what ever years ago nobody even knew what a gloomhaven was.

I’ve never played Gloomhaven, I’m unlikely ever to.

I’m also.confused by the whole thing (and the wider staying power of these types of campaigns). My conclusion is fanbois gonna fanboi.

I have bought and shipped copies to more than one person on this forum (because I both like them and because it was cheaper than buying it in their home countries). I might’ve enjoyed it, we’re it themed differently, but the aforementioned have not complained. Quite the opposite; they’ve all loved it. I can’t argue with success.

It being regularly used as a pre-order system for things that have already been made sure does muddy the waters for people, but I’ve always thought the deal with any crowdfunding was “I might lose all of this money”. To my mind, any assumptions about worst-case outcomes which are better than that simply come down to how much you personally trust the people running the campaign to succeed.

Very little on Kickstarter these days is actually speculative money raising, it’s marketing and market research.

I was initially put off on the Gloomhaven: Buttons & Bugs announcement, but looking into it more i am kind of excited. I’ve found Joe Klipfel (designer of Gloomholdin’, the inspiration for B&B) designs games that are theoretically cool, but in practice are way too fiddly to be anything more than a hype-attracting tagline. “In-hand 18-card Gloomhaven” is a fun premise, but Gloomholdin’ has like 50 pages of rules, and just looking at diagrams of the game setup gives me hand cramps and a migraine.

But Buttons & Bugs looks like a much more reasonable conceit, which is cool! I probably won’t ever play actual Gloomhaven, so a minified version that only costs 15 dollars is right up my alley.

I know everyone is already done with discovering JoCo2… and I blame myself for waiting for the German translation (I wanted to support Spielworxx)… but I am happy it finally after many a delay (almost like with the renovations) … it arrived!

I think I have plans for tonight (or maybe not depending how the next few hours of debugging go)

Lol Gloomhaven Update:

Last week, we released Buttons & Bugs, Cephalofair’s newest and smallest Gloomhaven experience.
It now sold over 10,000 copies and is the most backed item for the Gloomhaven Grand Festival!

I can’t help it but the smallest item at the grand festival sells the most

Makes sense. Along with the backers who just want this, I reckon most of the other backers probably added it as well – people who are already spending ~$200 on average aren’t likely to quibble at a $15 punt on an entire additional game!

I’m curious, but also sure it’ll appear at retail, so I’ll just check proper reviews and get it then if it’s good. I wasn’t sold by what I read about Gloomholdin’.

I literally just learnt there’s another one :frowning: which also seems fun. (It’s called wonder bowling or something) and it sounds fun too. A bit like that dragon gems off the box game from haba but with a bit more nuance.

I’m most looking forward to trying the see saw one and JUDGE DOMINO

Oh, viking seesaw must be the one I played. It’s OK, didn’t seem to be much scope for hilarity.
