Insight plus medicine is 17 (12 plus 5).

Fumbles around (!)
@DJCT asked for a die roll:
2d20: 6 + 20 = 26
@Snobbydolphin asked for a die roll:
Zin is going to use insight (11) + command (4) to offer up an improvised systematic approach to searching the facility (15).
2d20: 14 + 8 = 22
(So you rolled a Complication. What do you think happens that makes your lives a bit more difficult? Not impossible, not suddenly dire, but something has gotten worse. I am happy to I entertain whaiyou think is reasonable, although I may tweak it a bit: if you can’t think of anything, it can just be that this takes longer than expected)
Also, technically, you only need to roll 1 die to Support another player, but let’s stick with the 1 Success, 1 Complication you rolled. More interesting. ![]()
Tray is going to try and locate the humans….
Heh. 2d20 system you call it, eh ….
I would suggest the following during the fumbling:
“Now just let me pullout this logic flux circuit here and …
Oh. Oh dear.
I appear tae have ripped oot the wrang wire Keli’i. Should that alarm be going off? I think I might’ve been a bit too enthusiastic with my ripping! Should have put in half as much effort!”
“There’s a lot to be said for giving it a good stab, but…”
[In mechanical terms, for a difficulty 3 task I need 3 successes. So even with my Insight+Eng 15 I need to be rolling 3 dice, preferably 4.
I get one extra die from the doc’s help - the Complication doesn’t necessarily make this specific roll harder.
How much Momentum do we have?]
(Okay, so I’m going to say Zin used Simpson’s help to land your First Success of the three you need. That takes up Two units of Time from Zin and Simpson. You’re one third of the way there! Nice work!)
The alarm klaxons wail, and the klaxons alarm all of you. It’s more distracting than it is bothersome, but a few of you are already on edge, the fingers of paranoia flitting around the edges of your mind…
(We’re going to add +1 Complication Range to everyone until those alarms are dealt with. For most of you, that means you get a Complication on a 19-20, but for Rad and Zin, you now get Complications on 18-20… the alarms are adding to your already concerned state)
(The group has a whopping 5 Momentum at the moment, which is why I don’t mind allocating Simpson’s assistance to Zin… the upper limit of Momentum is 6, so you folks have to burn through some of it anyway. Buying 2 additional dice, bringing you up to 4d20 costs a total of 3 Momentum, one for the first and two for the second, and remember you may have Talents and Focuses that give you additional dice and/or increase your Critical Success range)
You head further into the eastern side of the facility. The rooms here look a little less destroyed… not “intact” per se, but less ruined, or ruined more hastily perhaps.
In the last room, the outpost’s medbay, you find them. A woman, face tear-streaked and hair dishevelled, cradling the head of a man that has been cruelly beaten, bruised and bloodied. Her initial response as you enter the room seems to be resigned defeat, but as she realizes you’re not going to immediately kill her, a faint glimmer of hope appears.
It fades quickly as she glances back down at the man with his head in her lap. You note that his physical appearance isn’t quite human any more. Mostly human, but there are elements of the primitive physique that the Neanderthal-like creatures had as well.
(Tray uses up One unit of Time to find the two scientists. There’s more… like her name and what she knows about what’s going on, but I’ll have to fill that in after work today!)
(I think that just leaves @WolfeRJ and @RogerBW with no Time units spent… you can go along with Tray, you can try to deal with the suddenly blaring alarms, which will be a Difficulty 2 Task, you can find parts for the shuttle, or you can do something completely different, either to create an Advantage or because you think it’ll be interesting! More in about 8 hours!)
@RogerBW asked for a die roll:
Keli’i:
I think I have to be Parts Finder Guy first. The Doc’s assist is going where it’s needed more, fair enough. So that’s 2 dice innately, and I’ll spend 3 Momentum for 2 more since I have a moderate chance of handing some back.
4d20: 17 + 18 + 9 + 9 = 53 vs 15
oopsie. No extra Complications but nor am I making any progress, and a Focus doesn’t seem to help. Can’t see a relevant Talent.
Whilst waiting for more details, Trey taps her comm badge.
“Doctor, I have injured here”
“Right, coming” say Dr Simpson and heads off [when he can] leaving the alarm stopping to those with the right skills.
@WolfeRJ asked for a die roll:
Vexed beyond human expression Rad identifies key alarm alert pieces and wrenches them out by main force.
Fitness 11 + Security 4 = 15 spend 1 momentum
3d20: 13 + 6 + 15 = 34
“Always hated that waking me up to deal with inebriated Orions on shore leave… c’mon let’s get ourselves out of here.”
On the cot in the back of medbay sits a middle-aged human. She cradles in her arms a man. It is hard to tell his age because of his strange appearance. His sweat-soaked face is covered with hair, and even as you watch, the ridges of his eyebrows twitch and pulse, as if changing in sporadic fits.
The woman looks at Tray as you enter and says “It’s too late. They’re all gone, and Jasper is…” She cannot finish her thought through her sobbing.
Over the course of a few minutes, you learn that her name is Dr. Heidi Schipp, the Federation scientist leading the team.
“We’re a team of 13 people, and we’ve been here for just over a year. I wanted to study this planet’s unique flora and fauna, to see if it offered any scientific or medical use. We were making some interesting headway when the ion storm hit… must be about eight days ago?” Her eyes unfocus and a wry smile appears on her face. “Heavens above, has it only been that long? Feels like a lifetime.” She shakes her head to clear it, and then continues. “Something about the storm has caused the living inhabitants to go through a process of… well, I hate to sound unscientific, but let’s call it ‘devolution.’ They aren’t actually devolving, but parts of their brain and physiology is being more barbaric, less capable of thought and more focused on violence and survival. Some of the scientists were more susceptible to the effects, changing almost immediately into the things that did all this.” She gestures with one hand and the broken machinery. “Others took longer, but they eventually transformed. I’ve held out the longest, but I’m starting to feel it.” She taps the side of her head with one finger.
There is a pause as she collects her thoughts again. She looks at you, a spark of hope back in her eyes.
“Just before the ion storm hit us, we managed to make a breakthrough in our research, discovering that a combination of some of the genetic material from a handful of plants and animals can be used in the treatment of, and possible cure for, Irumodic Syndrome.”
Her gaze falls back to the man she is holding.
“But it doesn’t matter. This is Dr. Jasper Conrad, my… personal assistant and… well, we’re close. We were close. Those creatures beat the shit out of him when they went berzerk, and they’ve broken five ribs, he’s got internal bleeding and a punctured lung at least… the only thing that’s keeping him alive right now is the biological shifting into one of those creatures himself. But it won’t keep him alive for much longer.” She strokes his chin gently, tears welling in her eyes again.
(Okay, so Keli’i has spent Two Units of Time, catching up to Zin and Simpson, while Tray has spent One Unit and Rad has spent One Unit of Time ripping out the alarm system.)
The blaring klaxons warble one final, plaintive warble… a note that oscillates somewhere between the screeching of a Norellian Blood Owl and the first few notes of “Oh Danny Boy.” And then it silences.
(Rad and Tray, you both have one unit of time before @DJCT is free to head to medbay: while Jasper’s wounds are extensive, he isn’t in immediate danger. You probably have… oh… ten to twelve units of time before he bleeds out. If anyone else has things they’d like to do, feel free to plan them, but keep in mind that until Rad and Tray spend at least another unit of time each, it’s still technically “they’re time.” Time whimy, wibbly wobbly.)
(Also, Rad’s efforts have kept the group at Two Momentum, just so y’all know)
@WolfeRJ asked for a die roll:
Rad will spend a unit of time policing the area of debris and hazards in an effort to help Keli’i out with shuttlecraft part scouting while glaring around and starting at shadows.
Fitness 11 + Engineering 1 = 12
d20: 20
Rad will obviously find the charged wiring and catch a jolt for whatever stress hit this 20 indicates.
Tray whips out her tricorder to scan both of them.
“Any working theories on why you are still you? Genetic? Exposure?.” I’ve got some experience in genetics.
She frowns.
When the doc gets here we’re going to have to aspirate the lung…
(Tray flexing her trauma surgery focus.)
