Selling/ Buying/ Trading Games

Joined one of the bigger UK Facebook selling 2nd hand boardgames groups, and all I can say is… if you want to sell a game, maybe don’t charge MORE than the full price new online?

£40 is not what you sell a 2nd hand game for when the rrp is £40?

What the hell, people?

You think that’s bad, you should see some of the secondhand prices in Japan. £100 for Dominion? £100 for Incan Gold?

I’m always amazed at the price that some people try to sell at, particularly when it’s available for less and new elsewhere

I assume they are hoping to haggle but who knows.

And yet I start at half retail, then stick some more discounts on, and I gain no interest at all…

The UK trading group definitely has a certain general preference for games. They either sell in 30 seconds, or sit around unsold. It is difficult when people are so completely unaware of supply and demand (Netrunner core does NOT sell for high mark ups regardless of being discontinued!), but there’s no point in price shaming unless you’re interested in buying. People will always have a go unfortunately. If it’s crazy then maybe a point needs to be raised, but otherwise it’s up to the buyer to properly research alternatives.

Starting at 70% of the cheapest boardgame prices price (shipping inclusive) is usually a good starting point unless it’s a game in high demand. More usually needs to be knocked off cheaper games since the 70% rule doesn’t scale so well.

For Netrunner original coreset: I won’t pay more than 15. Not sure about the revised core set though.

The revised goes for a bit nearer the MSRP, but I don’t think by much. Haven’t seen one in a group for a while. The original core is definitely not worth more than £15, far too many popping up.

I did see someone trying to shift the original core for £70 as a RARE GRAIL OOP GAME. I laughed.

Now that I’ve studied the games offered and the rules for this whole thing a bit, I have a question (or two) about these Math Trade proceedings.

  1. So I understand that in general I offer a game and make a wishlist per game I offer from the trades after the offer phase has ended. So the games I wish for should be roughly equal value to those I offer, I guess or otherwise there will be no trade for me. So how do I make sure that I have a close enough approximation of values to match my own games?

  2. what types of games will typically be left over? It seems that as a newbie, I can only add a limited number of games and I’d rather choose those games from my reject pile that have a chance of someone actually wanting them.

  3. there is a lot if really weird stuff on this math trade already, is it just weird to me or does a lot get left over?

I’m not going to be the best person to answer your questions, but from my one Maths Trade…

Loads of stuff got added in the last day before the deadline.

I had to set up my BGG account to put games that I wanted on my wishlist. It meant the trade software could do some of the lifting.

As it was my first MT, I only offered 2 games. I then went through everything that was in the trade that I wanted and then offered one of my games for that. It’s not 1 to 1 trades so I wouldn’t feel bad about trying to trade your Coup for a fully kitted out Cthulhu Wars (you never know )

I’d say the best way to offer like for like value is to look at what things are going for on the geekmarket. But value is what the trader’s perceive, the software won’t stop you making a poor value (monetary wise) trade, so only say you want something if you’re prepared to swap your game for it.

I really enjoyed my trading experience. I’m definitely doing more

  1. You can either hand-tune the lists for each item, or (assuming this is using the OLWLG) you can assign a value to each thing you want and to each thing you offer, then let the system automate it. Either way you have to make your own decisions about values.

  2. New hotness is always wanted. Munchkin is not (with occasional exceptions). Apart from that, it’s hard to tell.

  3. In the UK MTs it’s not rare for people to get no trades out of 10 items, even things one might expect to be popular. (I’ve got a few things by looking down the lists afterwards and saying “hey, X, your item Y that I wanted didn’t trade, how about I offer you some money instead”.)

For 2 and 3, if this is on the OLWLG, you may be able to find information on what traded last time.

People have an odd sense of value, like people who nickel and dime me over fees.

Just add them onto your price. Make it easy for me as seller to calculate the price.

Set and forget at 70% all in from the cheapest available online store for me.

You really don’t have to worry about matching values too much. The whole point of math trades is to facilitate 3-way trades or even more convoluted trades. So your “low value” game could indirectly end up traded “for” something you would have thought was more valuable, but not as a straight swap.

Oh, yes - there’s absolutely nothing wrong in saying “I would be happy to exchange my copy of Tiny Card Game for that copy of Gloomhaven”. Make sure all the trades you agree to are ones that you would be happy with, and trust everyone else to do the same.

It should be noted however, that the item you get will almost always be the worst one. So for instance, if you wantlist both a damaged copy and a mint condition copy, you’ll get the damaged one. Probably.

Im just going to put it up here again - if anyone would like a German version of Quacks just for the price of postage (punched but never played), they are welcome to it.

I can provide translation for the text on the game materials if necessary

Its already gone!

I’m trying to get my inlaws into gaming (the only people we can play games with at the moment cos they are in our childcare bubble) and so I didn’t want to have to translate every time.

I finally managed to add items to the German math trade list. I think I am good with attempting to trade 3 games. Wish me luck filling out the wishlists next week. I added Barony, Tiny Epic Zombies and Elder Sign to the list. Those are the best from my reject pile that I could add without having to go through the whole box to figure out which expansions are in my Smashup Big Box or my King of Tokyo. PS: There are over 1350 games on the list!

OMG I have to use that weird 90s-throwback tool to generate wishlists now… argh. I don’t even know where to begin. But tomorrow I will anyway. There is nearly 2000 games on the list although there is one person who has apparently 100 games entered into the list. That’s crazy how will those ever get traded…
