I would be keen on what old games they’ll put up for reprint.
Also Dogs of War reprint confirmed!
It’s Dice Tower Essentials, but s/dice tower/pear/g
?
Ok, I was skeptical until Dogs of War was mentioned. I’m interested to see how different it’ll be. The two attempts to remake Ethnos left me cold and I really like the aesthetics of the original DoW.
I doubt they’ll manage to make it a lower price, considering my copy cost me £22.50 …
Is it just me, or does using this to promote a NEW unreleased game out of the gate destroy any semblance of objectivity? If they limited this to “games reviewed by SUSD prior to this announcement” it would come across a bit differently; but immediately it’s not that.
I have no stake here as I dont listen to SUSD anymore but I suppose if they did the same thing with the SUSD expansion of Monikers, I would have no problem with that.
What would current fans here think?
Wilmot’s Warehouse as well of course, which they worked on.
Oh, gosh. “The Pear Essentials” would have been such a good name!
Apparently the right one is the work-in-progress, but at least they spelled the designers’ names correctly.
Just pearly missed it!
I wouldn’t want to see them using this to promote games that SUSD folks worked on purely on account of the “a new title annually” part of the announcement. I think the line would lose any credibility if they did this only once a year, and it turned out to be something SUSD had worked on.
If it weren’t for that (i.e. they did any arbitrary number of these in a year) then it wouldn’t really bother me to see “SUSD Presents… a game we worked on”, just so long as that fact was made apparent, because then the bias is too obvious to mislead anyone. But “SUSD Presents… a game we worked on… in preference to any number of stone-cold classics that deserve reprints…” would come across a bit differently.
It’s good art, but it’s not a particularly unique theme. Where are the steam-powered soldiers? Where are the hats??
That’s what I was about to respond. There is a distinct lack of hats on this cover!
I think that’s probably why they are pairing it with a game that is considered a stone cold classic. As long as it is a game they have been able to play and honestly review positively, then I don’t really see too much of an issue with it. Though I admit I would definitely prefer that going forward they just endorse reprints of well-loved games.
I haven’t seen any Play to Z products (mostly due to the timing of my involvement in the hobby). I feel as though those form-factors look good, but they could be A3 footprint for all we know. Ideally, they would be A5.
I feel myself wishing Allplay were involved instead.
Considering Play-to-Z was founded by Zev Shlasinger (founder of Z-Man Games), and co-founded with Stephen Buonocore (founder of Stronghold Games), Geoff Engelstein, all three of whom have pretty good track records to my knowledge, and some other game designers, I am willing to give them a chance.
I’ll hopefully be able to show off their first (I think) production sometime this month, if Ascending Empires turns up on schedule…
This is a new publisher - this year or last year. Zev used to work for Wizkids previously and released bangers like Sidereal Confluence.
I think “here’s an old game we loved that’s out of print, we’re going to make sure it gets a new edition” is a brilliant idea.
On brand new games SUSD’s tastes aren’t the same as mine (given what they’ve co-designed previously), so I’m much more wary. But “Oh yes, that game was awesome and they’re bringing it back” is a great use of SUSD’s high profile.
Agreeing with that. There is more than enough of those in their own catalogue of reviews.
The “we worked on the game” is a bit … … … I feel like either you are a reviewer or designer. Both… a bit difficult. But until I see what is coming out of that, I’ll go with a mild case of “hmf” as a comment.
