“Oy!” “Wut?” Just chat (The Return of)

It’s a big jump certainly.

Anatomically, off axis light focuses behind your peripheral retina, so the eye grows over time to make it focus.

This process normally stops in teenagers/ early 20s.

What @yashima said is a good working theory, our change in lifestyles since the pandemic with more close work could be the driver of myopic shifts in adults.

There is strong evidence in children that lots of outside play is protective against myopia.

What you’re experiencing with your new specs is that your focusing demand to read outweighs your ability to do so, you can try pulling your specs down your nose to read. Otherwise it’s the point of life for an occupational lens or a varifocal.

Oddly, my myopia has gotten much better. When I was about 20, I was -6ish in both eyes. Starting about 10 years ago, it has gone down pretty much every year- I am plano in one eye, and -1 in the other. My astigmatism has gotten worse (not quite 2 diopters) and I have a diopter of vertical prism added a couple years ago (which greatly reduced eye strain from close work.). And, of course, my near accommodation has gone to shit. So I need glasses to do anything.

You finally hit the gloom, when sunset is around 16.00 but cloud cover means it’s effectively 14.30.

Did you miss the whole month of it never really being light?

Ah, but without this you wouldn’t be able to walk around at half past ten at night in July and it still be light, which is always fun.

If you do some kind of ceremony in honour of the gods in about three weeks or so, I bet you they’ll listen and the days will start getting longer again. We’ve been doing it for years and it never fails.

Try doing something with a tree, maybe some holly and some ivy, have a feast. Stuff like that. Bet you it’ll work.

It may have worked these last 5000 years or so, but what makes you so sure it’ll work again?

Okay, I can’t be sure. But imagine if I stopped doing it and then it stayed dark for ever? I simply can’t take that risk!

Plus I like the tree and the food.

If it stops working, we’ve falsified the theory and need to get a new hypothesis. Until then carry on!

We bought a new car. Well a new used car. But for the first time in my life I don’t have a small car anymore but a BMW, a X1 model. And I don’t know how to feel about that… :see_no_evil:

For the last like 10 years or even more I drove Toyota Yaris (2 different models, the latest one for 6 years) and we were really happy with it. Especially in a big city, you can park it almost everywhere. It has great mileage and offers enough space for what we need. I moved twice with only that car! (Well I had to drive twice for every move and had no furniture beside my office chair but still.)
It is just that my wife is only allowed to drive automatic and our Yaris is a stick. It is generally not a problem that I always drive but it is limiting her of course. If she wants to drive a friend she either uses public transportation (sometimes a big pain in the butt) or I drive her and that can be cumbersome.

So we decided a couple years ago that we look for a new car. We weren’t sure back then what kind of car we want. Something bigger to accommodate 1-2 kids in theory or something of the size of our Yaris. To be honest we weren’t sure because didn’t know how life will turn out. I told my father who always hears about good car deals because of his business to tell us if something comes up and we waited.

A couple weeks ago he approached us and told us a friend is selling his BMW X1 and it is a pretty good price for the miles the car has, especially for all the equipment it comes with.
We checked the car out and it is very nice. I wonder if I need all that stuff, probably not but you always get quickly used to more luxury. It even has a panoramic roof, I am curious about that one.
It’s just that I never saw myself as a BMW driver. When I was younger and everybody was going for big cars (especially in my family) like Mercedes, Audi, BMW etc., I just wanted a small useful car. Nothing too glamorous.
But here I am… I guess times are changing and we can afford it (the upkeep costs are higher of course), it is not an unreasonable expense. It just feels weird somehow :person_shrugging: .

Vlaada is NOT RETIRED!

Hi, I am Vlaada Chvátil. Some of you might know me as the designer of several board games…and some of you may be wondering what I have been up to in the past few years. Well, let me tell you.

Of course I bought the app … I am not much for playing games with unknown people online. I barely ever play with anyone I don‘t know on BGA. Barely ever? No never.

Somehow the codenames app succeeds. It‘s pretty good, the puzzles are nice, both the guessing and the clue giving puzzles.

I have 2 game modes so far: standard, coop vs random assassin and a weird one that hasn‘t started yet. I forget the exact details. The app implementation is very well done. Very smooth.

Thanks for the read! I didn’t know about the app but it sounds pretty cool and something quick in between.
