I never imagined that the Tug of War and Pistol Dueling lobbies were so strong.
They used to have an event for poetry and architecture…
My definition would be that a sport has an organisation to oversee the game in a consistent manner.
This means that Crokinole is a sport.
If chess is a sport, so should be Crokinole… Agricola is where I would put the limit…
I have definitely heard it argued that bridge is a sport…
Agricola is no more or less a sport than is chess, which is absolutely not a sport.
Crokinole (the appeal of which eludes me) is more of a sport than chess. At least there’s some physical skill involved, which for me is a requirement of a sport. Although there must be some other requirements (in my mind) too, because I don’t believe Crokinole is a sport!
The International Olympic Committee has a distinct list of “mind sports”
SportAccord recognising Bridge as a sport seems to be breaking their own rules. Technically, I suppose their rules only apply to “new” applications though - maybe Bridge got in early.
For me, there has to be a direct physically opposed competition for something to be considered a sport. Baseball qualifies, because while one team is hitting a ball, the other team is trying to catch that ball and tag the base or the player with it. Golf, on the other hand, is not a sport, just an activity, as there is no physical opposition to your opponents. It’s more a game of your own skill vs. the course itself. Bowling falls under this category as well.
Watched a video about Manila (Philippines) being the first World City. Raised eyebrows and continued on. At least he knows what the Manila Galleon Trade is. THAT surprised me. And then, he proceed to with a bizarre twist. The prominence of Manila fell because of the American takeover (and WW2). That’s when I stopped and put down my comments on the reasons of Manila lagged behind (Spain lost its great silver mines which are in its former American colonies, therefore the Manila Galleons; European colonialism isn’t that fun. Hello??; Industrial Revolution; yadda yadda) and then moved on.
Another standard White dude from America who reads wiki articles and thinks everything is America’s fault. The New Right are instant red flag, but I am finding these “Anti-Imperialist” people to be very concerning in their own way.
This is why I really can’t wait for Hegemony 2 and the degenerate ways of them teaching international affairs to a great number of people in the hobby who are proud to be smarter than everyone else.
I guess that last bit was sarcasm, because Hegemony is a bad teacher?
I’m getting a brainstorm.
Golf, but teams and there is no stoppage until the ball is in the rough or in the hole. Each team has their own hole on either side of the fairway. The team is made up of 7 positions, named for the club it is equipped with.
I do enjoy early descriptions of Shinty / Hurling, which was “two villages get a load of wooden bats and have to get the ball to the goal. There are no rules, and it’s basically fighting. Go.”
Class Warfare is a simplistic concept. Basically any idea that gives simple solutions aren’t to be trusted. It’s fun but there are times where I thought “yeah. This is not how it works IRL”
Early football much the same, just without bats!
And for more excitement, lets put them on horseback! Oh, wait, we’re just making a polo variant now…
Slightly more sophisticated than what I had in mind… but I like what I see.
“I don’t want tiers. I don’t want to unlock shit. I don’t want to back shit and yammer with other backers for 18 months like a bunch of crypto losers. I don’t give a shit about bonus minis for a game I haven’t even played one turn of yet. I don’t need a comic book about the game. I want to make a recreational purchase decision, I’m not a private equity guy. Even good creators look like shit when they’re selling in a low-rent casino next to a bunch of assholes cashing in on lifestyle toys.”
Lacrosse originated like this, didn’t it? And I believe there was an early version of hockey back in Britain where they were just following that same spirit…
