Make It or Break It! (A Maker Topic)

I love this sort of 3D-printing project.

Had an idea, threw together a quick proof of concept and printed it out. That let me figure out what didn’t quite work. Tweaked things, printed the revised version, job done.

A simple pair of stands for my desktop speakers that tilt them up slightly more towards my ears.

Heh, a similar thing for an ebook:

I assembled a shed!

I did have to construct the platform it rests on (which ended up being about half the price of the shed itself). Need to add some caulk around most of the connecting points to help keep buggies out, and some mesh over the vents, but overall I am pleased with it.

Looking forward to regaining some space in our garage.

A band I’m seeing later this year asked folks to bring “pixel accessories” so I did what I do best and made a blinky badge:

I made a thing! Not much of a thing, but a thing it is.

This is a combination of my mini rulebook for Piepmatz with the Pocketmod format - they want you to spend lots of money on their stuff, but this is the page you actually need. Along with the incantation of the correct order and orientation in which to place the pages. (1 on the top left, 2-5 down the right side, 6-8 back up the left side, bottom of page to the centreline.)

The official approach seems to be to design at full size and scale down, but instead I told LibreOffice to work on a custom A7-sized page and designed at target size. Then I avoided using the official software (which is only for Windows anyway) by spending five minutes writing Perl which will give me the arranged pages on a single sheet ready to print.

ETA: converted my Shamans and Baseball Highlights 2045 rules too.

I got enthusiastic and now there’s a microsite.

A small thing that I made (it’s a sun catcher):

I guess if the sun doesn’t come up tomorrow we’ll know who caught it…

The work Makerspace 3D printers have been out of action for months because some overzealous H&S rep demanded they be enclosed in a fume hood, despite the room being well air conditioned.

The Makerspace has just acquired a small laser cutter/engraver so I was surprised to see it set up with just a couple of solder fume extractors. Went in to use it (to make some Xmas ornaments) this morning and it’s gone…

A D&D-themed piece for a friend’s birthday. It’s a type of embroidery called black work (traditionally done using black thread on white fabric)

This is going above my desk…

I’m now down to 2 unfinished pieces and 5 patterns in the queue :grimacing:

I’ve been doing a “fine woodworking” (i.e., no machines) course this weekend, and these are the results:

That T shape is a mortise and tenon joint, not just two bits of wood next to each other

Not pictured, the result of putting my finger in the way of a very sharp chisel…

Perhaps I should work my way up to crokinole boards

It’s been a while since I’ve had some PCBs made. This time it’s a tiny patch board so I can do away with a mess of jumper cables for the thing I’ve been coding recently.

Very niche, but then again all my stuff tends to be.

Today is my company’s chili cook-off. Judging is based on taste, appearance, aroma, texture, but also presentation.

My entry:

The Unmatched version of the Wayward (Weird) Sisters from MacBeth.

Oh yeah, I am definitely placing today!

The suspense. Did you place?

Results just came in a bit ago. I did NOT place. I call shenanigans :stuck_out_tongue:

The top two winners were rather spicy, and I will admit mine thickened up too much. I usually bring some beef broth with me to help thin it out earlier in the day if that happens, but I didn’t have any. Oh well, there’s always next time.

You were clearly robbed!

Shenanigans indeed! You was robbed I tells ya!

I think we just had spice loving judges this year. There’s also a cornbread entry, and at least two of the winners had peppers or chilis of some kind baked into them. Maybe all three.
