Last game you bought?

Aiya! I could have waited, and bought your spare

Maryse and I are curtently on vacation in the region (though not the city) where I grew up. Stopping in a local community bookstore, I saw a copy of The Guild of Merchant Explorers.

I’ve never heard of that game. No idea how it plays or how good it is. But something was calling to me. So I got it.

Probably because of the Zimbabwe cows, I made a last-minute preorder for Bailiff of Boscoop, despite it looking overly complex. Just supporting Splotter doing their thing.

Take it you got a copy. Your after action report pushed me over the edge to get it!

Found Flip 7 at Goodwill for $4, unopened, so it came home with me.

Had a one-day convention with a massive buy and sell table in it. Bought Origin Story for about half price, and got Nimalia and Cockroach Poker for basically free.

Found One Night Ultimate Werewolf: Daybreak cheap at Goodwill a week or so ago, so picked it up. Not really sure why since I have barely played my copy of the original ONUW, but here we are.

Then my wife wanted to get me a small treat the other day and my FLGS had a used copy of Space Base, which I have enjoyed playing on BGA, so got that. It’s in really good shape.

Our German friend was visiting her parents last week, so muled this back to Cardiff for me. I’ve not played this or Macao, but a geek buddy with very similar ratings to me has this as a 10, so I’m very hopeful.

I was doing so well at not buying boardgames, and then I had a moment of weakness.

Anyway, I just bought River of Gold, River Valley Glassworks and Cozy Stickerville.

(And thanks to generous folk here, The Bloody Inn for cheap).

It feels like every summer my household goes crazy and I fall off the internet almost entirely, and then every autumn, I crawl back into the various corners of the internet from which I had faded…

And then I realize that I haven’t posted anything recently, and that despite buying very little (especially compared to my prior buying habits), I do actually have a few things to discuss!

High Frontier 4 All – Exodus –

I really enjoy HF4A. I mean, it has some sharp edges, but it’s so fun to blast a spaceship across the solar system in one turn (and then spend the next 12 years trying to figure out how to get it back home). When I bought HF4A, it came as a bundle with Modules 1, 2, 3. Since then, Modules 4, 5, and now 6 are out or have been announced- and I believe Module 7 may even be planned? Unfortunately, Module 5 and 6 don’t work with solo play, so I’ve never given them much thought. But Module 4 features an update to the Module 0 solo rules, along with some really interesting new mechanisms that make the game more interesting for repeated plays.
However, in the past, buying a single Module from ION directly meant paying almost as much again for shipping. At some point, I went to various online game retailers and signed up to be notified for Module 4 to be restocked, and at some point while out of time on family vacation over the summer, I got a restock notification. Easy decision, and it landed on my doorstep the day after I got home from vacation.
However, my HF4A box was already overloaded, and this arrival prompted me to uncombine the expansions from the base game box back into their (very nice) expansion boxes.

Imperium: Classics –

I’ve heard a lot about this game. At the local gaming convention that I briefly attended over the summer, I saw a full collection of Imperium Classics/Legends/Horizons for $100; I was very tempted, but felt like without having played it at all, it was foolish to spend that kind of money. I opted instead to grab just Classics and try that out. Restraint!

Everdell Silverfrost - Collector’s Edition –

I made the mistake of tapping on the local Facebook Gaming Buy/Sell/Trade group and saw someone post this for $35 and a local meetup. Silverfrost, I’m told, is the most complex of the Everdell games, so I’m definitely interested in that. But, more importantly, I was able to remove the retail version from my wishlist, which was listed at $100

Railways of the Lost Atlas / Landmarks of the Lost Atlas –

I’ve been sitting on some birthday cash for a couple of months now, unsure of what I really wanted to spend it on. As I was catching up on BGG (after taking the summer off, apparently), I noticed that the Landmarks of the Lost Atlas crowdfunding was fulfilling, and I also noticed that the reprint of the base game came with some updates, including the official solo mode that was added between printings.
I’m very excited for more solo 18xx. My biggest complaint about solo 1862 is how samey the board develops while playing solo- having a modular board seems like a big win, so hopefully the gameplay can match the crunchiness of 1862.

Thing I always say: to learn the game, use the Imperium Horizons rulebook (it’s on BGG). (Unless there’s an updated original rulebook by now, I don’t know.)

Can confirm that Silverfrost is the most complex one, by a few orders of magnitude. The snow adds a lot of balls to juggle. It’s awesome.
