Just ordered Age of Rail: South Africa to keep up with the iron rails from Capstone and Die Patin from Zoch on a two sentence preview from W. Eric Martin.
Ordered the reprint of el grande since itâs started selling out and itâs been one Iâve fancied for a while.
Christmas haul!
So I received Cascadia, Tokaido Duo, Tokaido: Matsuri expansion, Haunted Mansion: Call of the Spirits, Star Wars: Jabbaâs Palace (a Love Letter game), Furnace and itâs expansion, and Arkham Horror TCG: The Blob That Ate Everything.
Then, with some money I received, I picked up used copies of Tash-Kalar and Fief: France 1429 from my FLGS. Lastly, I ordered the Deus: Egypt expansion as it is currently on sale for $4 with $3 shipping online, since it sounds like Asmodee has no intention of reprinting it.
Bought Ticket to Ride Legacy, My City, and My Island. Got My City for half price.
Bought Vaalbara (replaces Citadels), Earth and Unmatched Adventures: Tales to Amaze, at some good sales prices.
Didnât get any board games for Christmas, but I did pick up the following for ~$20CAD each on boxing day sales:
Triqueta
Cartagena: Escape Dairies
Oak

Match of the Century
We got Terraforming Mars as a Christmas present. I donât know much about it except that I heard its name everywhere on this forum. It seems a very popular game. And it is #6 on BGG I just found out.
Curious what I got there. It also seems pretty big.
We really like it. Havenât played in a while but have been banging through it on BGA.
Itâs very, very euro. Multiplayer solitaire with some random take that elements.
Thanks for the information! Have to learn the rules and organize a board game night it seems
Itâs one of those games with a huge stack of cards and you canât catchâuh play them all but you really want to and thatâs the conundrum⌠you use the cards to build a bit of an engine to generate some resources which you can use to move 3 gauges that finish the terraforming process (Heat, O^2 and water) and end the game. Or you can just go for pure VP cards and let other players determine when the game ends. Itâs a lovely puzzle always pulling you toward different strategies depending on the cards you get (as usual seeing more cards is valuable).
It is not all that difficult to learn but it takes practice to deal with the âluck of the drawâ and figure out what to make of your hand of cards. If you enjoy it even a little bit there is 1 single must-have expansion (Prelude), everything else is just for people who got bored with the huge stack of cards because âthe same ones always come upâ (which is ridiculous but happens after 50+ games)
PS: it has an excellent solo-mode as well that initially may seem unwinnableâŚ
Or we always try and build the same engine, so never pick different cards
Itâs soloable on BGA as well
A thing to avoid: the rules suggest that drafting cards is an optional rule, but the game is much duller without it even if you donât know what youâre doing.
Ah, so I was going to say that drafting is probably a better game but it will add at least half an hour and we never felt that it was worth it!
Fair enough, count it as a Roger weirdness and I donât love the game anyway.
(Without drafting I think thereâs barely any game.)
I think Iâm the weird one.
I donât bother with the drafting and I like the take that cards
Now I am a bit confused about how to play the game
To draft or not to draftâŚ
We will see
Try both and see which you like best
