Fuck cancer.
Found out that we’re having a boy in a few months, which means that the list of kid names that meet the criteria of low-key Star Wars references that begin with a ‘k’ sound and don’t rhyme with ‘file’ got shortened significantly. (sorry, Mr. Katarn…)
At the moment, we’re leaning toward Calvin, with Cal as the daily use version, which could be a stand-in for Cal Kestis or be short for Calrissian, as well as Mon Calamari.
I am so sorry, the first name that came to mind was Kirk…
That’s Harry Potter though…
Lord of the Rings, surely?
First toy will be a stuffed tiger.
Part of the appeal is that people will surely assume that it is a Calvin and Hobbes reference.
My mom was a massive Star Wars fan, but she liked any sci-fi, which is why my first name is a kenobi reference, and my middle name is James.
Not Tiberius? Not committed enough ![]()
I asked her about that, but she said that my dad wouldn’t go for it. According to her, James was an easier sell, and he was unaware of the Kenobi/Kirk origin of my first and middle names until it was far too late.
Gosh. Things are terrible. Here’s a picture of a cat not wanting to be Yoda.
I had an agm last night. Got accused of slander.
Totally worth it.
Reassembled the lunch area at work. Not explicitly stated we could but if 15 middle and senior people can sit maskless in a meeting room all day we can have lunch away from our desks.
There are two houses on my street that are currently for sale. One of them is asking $900K, the other is around that value.
When we bought our home in 2014, we got it for $310K. It has almost tripled in value since then, apparently… which is an interesting datapoint.
The problem is a purely idiotic one: I have been fantasizing recently about selling our home for $2M, and moving to someplace cheap (Timmins, in Northern Ontario, has a sane housing market for the time being… average house price is $200K), and living off the excess for at least 20 years as I write so I can actually become a full-time author. We’ve basically paid off the house (not quite, but it’s a blip… our agents would make more from the sale than the banks would), so in my brain it was some simple math:
$2M - $400K (let’s say we get a nicer-than-average house) = $1.6M. I make $30K a year at my current job, which means it would pay for approximately 50 years of my salary, but if we include my partner’s salary as well that drops significantly (she makes about $50-60K), so let’s say 10-20 years.
Excluding investments (which I don’t trust) and interest (which is minuscule anyway). And I’m not looking to live off that money forever, just for the few years it would take for my book sales to be sufficient to live off of…
But that all hinges on some bizare brain-hiccup where I somehow thought that our home is worth literally twice what it might be worth in this insane market.
First world problems, yo. I really need to find work that is less soul-crushing.
Sounds idyllic. I find house prices are odd as my house goes up in value but then if I sell I’d need to buy another house that (presumably) has also gone up the same percent value.
Unless you downsize or, as you say, relocate to a cheaper area you never realise that value into cash.
I’ve just had my only direct report move jobs because of this.
I’m in Boise, Idaho, and the housing market here is also completely nuts right now. Our place has increased nearly 400% in the last 4 years. Lovely Wife and I are both teachers, and we’ve had whole families move because they’re worried that if they stay, their kids won’t be able to afford a home anywhere near them once they grow up.
I know less about Canadian real estate than most things, but if my experience with real estate in my area has taught me anything, find a good real estate agent that specializes in your area and ask them what your house is worth. That will take it from “day dream” status to “can we actually do this?” status.
I know there aren’t many cricket fans on here, but Shane Warne has died. 52, from a heart attack.
He was an absolute titan of the game (probably equivalent to Jim Brown, Wayne Gretzky or Pele)and one of childhood heroes (and tormentors as he’s an Aussie).
This is literally the first ball he bowled against England. 30 years later it still staggers me
Warney is dead? Oh man, I can’t believe it. Way too young. A true legend of the game.
This is a sad day.
Damn. He was a goober at times, but he was an incredible bowler, and he clearly loved the game. Numerous times I heard of him happily helping spin bowlers from other teams and countries to improve their craft, and I’m sure he would have continued to contribute to cricket in many ways for a very long time. I can’t believe he’s dead at only 52.
