How are you today?

I’ve got two Pfizers and a Moderna and the hardwired set collector in my brain is going crazy.

Well our youngest just tested positive for covid so my weekend plans are changing. Sigh. Thankfully everyone is fine and vaccinated.

We just got an au pair from Brazil - she tested negative to get on the flight but probably picked it up WHILE BEING TESTED. Positive on arrival.

We’re on day 8 since the positive. It’s been… a complicated week. But everyone else is still clear including the unvaccinated little ones, and the au pair is finally out of basement isolation (though still masked).

In other times, keeping an immigrant locked up in the basement would be a cause for alarm.

I teach a section of English called The Study and Craft of Song and Poetry Writing. It uses the full set of our English standards, but uses poetry and lyrics instead of novels and other long-form texts. It’s designed to allow more student choice in how they hit the required credits, and also to serve as a do-over for students that failed this year of English before, without them covering the exact same ground.

Currently, we’re working up to writing librettos, so they’re practicing by setting lyrics to the allegretto from Symphony no. 7. (while a small child sits in the corner making vroom-vroom noises and periodically shouts “This is LOUD!”)

Holy cow you aren’t kidding. We have light wells, and they of course have grills over them so the kids don’t fall to their death or maiming. So she comes to America, we isolate her in the basement, and she’s sending pictures to her family out her basement window that is covered by bars.

We’re blinking at each other like… context. Context is everything.

Two days from normalcy and counting.

I may have to queue for five hours tomorrow to get tested to satisfy my wife’s work.

It’s sounds like your employer and your wife’s employer are on the opposite ends of the caution scale… I hope you have somewhere comfortable to queue if you have to.

Nope, I’ll be out in the cold among lots of other people worried that they might be infectious. The whole thing is ridiculous.

Just back from dentist, found out I need the next implant. The inflamed tooth cannot be saved. The first surgery for the first implant was almost to the day a year ago. My housecleaner is still here, so I have to keep it together until she has left. Then I can curl up and cry. Also almost hit the neighbor in the garage as he passed behind my car.

Oh goodness I’m sorry. Hugs and good thoughts.

I’ve calmed down a bit. I am not overly surprised. I just assumed I had a little more time before the next set of surgery. It’s just teeth. Luxury problems in general compared to other stuff. But seeing as it is my problem in this case, it still stresses me out. I’ve made an appointment for after vacation to get it over with ASAP. Sometimes a good cry is needed though.

I’ve been writing unit tests all afternoon–really stupid ones, too. But they need to be done. It’s quite soothing.

It is totally okay to feel it. Speaking from some personal experience, teeth issues are tied directly to survival anxieties in some pretty primal ways.

Makes sense. Without teeth, you can’t chew, and thus, cannot eat. Primal instincts predate blenders.

My stepson’s dog died yesterday. Not a great surprise; she was old and a bit infirm. And she had a decent life, most recently in Norway where they now live. Smartest dog I’ve ever met (¾ collie, ¼ NZ Huntaway); I am proud to say that I made the one fake throw that she ever fell for, and the first one she didn’t.

Anzac.

I’m back in the office today, pointlessly, so I’m grumpy.

Lately I’ve been struggling to focus on any projects (frazzled by work, housebuying, etc.) , which has left me dwelling a bit on unsuccessful ones. I got lovely feedback from SJG which was essentially “this sounds great, that line isn’t profitable, BUT please pitch us something else and try this one again in a year”, which is very encouraging objectively. Only I’m drawing a total blank on other ideas… Meanwhile Thing got 99% written because I was interested in it, and is now sitting uselessly on my hard drive.

(I publish my own games stuff occasionally, and there’s no money in RPGs. But I would still value getting published professionally for personal validation)

It’s been a good couple days here. Lots of family time over the weekend, and my full dept. staff is back in action after two weeks of a skeleton crew.

My biggest problem at the moment is deciding between Chronicles of Crime:1400 or 2400, which is a pretty good position to be in.

First interview this evening (through Team Meetings as we are on red light here in NZ due to Omicron entering the community last weekend) out of 4 jobs I applied to the last few days. Nervous, it is my first ever interview online… I’m not keeping up with the times!

Pro-tip: Wear pants

Unless it’s a different sort of job

I did not wear pants to a video interview about 10 years ago. The interviewer then actually asked if I were wearing pants! I said no, he laughed, and I did end up getting invited to the onsite interview and evaluation.

So, I wouldn’t say it’s a hard and fast rule.
