10 games to take on a weekend away

So, in about 1 month I’ll be away for the weekend at my church’s weekend away. Think of lots of families and lots of varying interest for palying board games. As you lot are better the the Internet At Large™, who are prone to recommending True Boardgamer Games™ I’d like to take a small cross section of games to play, depending on interest. Ideally this would be from my collection, but I’m not adverse to buying one or two more.

My owned list is here - raged_norm | User Collection | BoardGameGeek

What should I take? I’ve alread settled on Codenames, 6Nimmt, Camel Up and Power Grid (for the very interested).

From your collection:

  • Scout
  • Azul Mini
  • Sushi Go Party
  • possibly RftG because the base game travels easily and it speaks to people with more of a gamer mindset
  • Dobble (i only played once, not my thing but should be good for your week-end)

Ideally, you want to pick the games we discussed that are “quick teaches” in the last ToW.

So the super-quick teachy party style games, I keep putting up for recs:

  • Just One (or So Clover if you prefer that)
  • The Gang
  • Concept

I feel like all current SdJ nominees might be a good fit (Flip7, Krakel Orakel (no English yet, sorry) and Bomb Busters). I think Flip7 is widely available and plays up to 18 people! Caveat: I have read the rules but haven’t played: the deck is a bunch of numbered cards and on your turn you draw a card or pass. You keep drawing more until you pass or bust. You bust when you draw a number you already have. There is only a single 1 in the deck but 12 x 12. So more valuable cards that give more points are more likely to bust you. That’s the game afaik

Ride the Rails - gamer game, small box, short rules, loads of replayability, good for gamers, softer than Irish Gauge for non train gamers
Carcassonne - dead easy activity, anyone can play
Double - it’s a classic
Klask - weekend long tournaments
For Sale - high player count, easy to teach to drunk parents where the kids have gone to bed

*Edit- That’s Not a Hat

: a train game disguised as a non-train game

You will have the following advantages:

  • Trains
  • Take about a week to play through them all
  • Trains
  • Everyone else will ensure that you are not responsible for arranging games for future trips

On the other hand, if you wish to have friends at the end of the week, and have the opportunity to bring games for the next retreat, I would recommend following the advice of someone else in this thread.
