Wot are you playing (video games)

That sounds quite convincing. I’ll see what I’ll be doing once I am done with Zelda. This is my second playthrough of Botw and this time I really want to finish everything… first time I was happy to manage to take down the final boss… so I’ll be busy for a while yet. But Dark Souls has been brought to the Switch AFAIK.

Oh, it absolutely isn’t a roguelike, it’s obvious the developers have learned little to nothing from all the development since Nethack. That said, they also seem to have learned little from all the years of development since Wizardry, or from jRPG dungeon crawls.

I am very dismissive of Darkest Dungeon, despite the fact my first impressions were good, and I played it to completion, or perhaps because I played it to completion.

I’d argue they learned a lot and applied that knowledge with a rare focus. I don’t want to derail this too far but I find it fascinating that we can have such polarizing opinions on this one. It’s not that I don’t recognize what you find so frustrating or lacking (or that I even disagree); It’s just that I think it’s a unique and special game for those exclusions.

This whole conversation has just further convinced me that Hollow Knight is the best Souls game.

Games with a generic level up mechanic just annoy me these days.

So a few weeks back I mentioned that I got a Switch and it immediately stopped working (worked for one day, and then stopped reading the joycons unless they were connected, which makes it useless for the game I want to play).

After about an hour on the phone with Nintendo, I get all the details down, except for one little thing: the person I am talking to doesn’t get my address right. It’s a relatively small difference: they think I live on a street called “Maplewood Drive”, and it actually is “Mapwood Drive” (it’s not, but something similar). They ask for clarification, I very slowly spell it out three times until, finally, they repeat the correct address back.

Lovely. They send an automated message to print out to mail the things back to them for repair: and right there in the return address it says “Maplewood”. Huh, not my address, fine. I call them back, point out that my address is still wrong, they send new tags with my correct return address. Lovely.

(In the meantime I buy new joycons, because who knows how long this will take. They show up at my home, and do not work even for a day. Uh-oh, thinks I, this is probably an issue with the console, but I’ll wait until the repaired joycons show up on the off chance that I happened to get a second faulty set of joycons).

Cool. This was early November. I get a message saying they’ve received everything, and they’ll keep me posted.

Nada.

November 14th I get an email saying “There was a problem delivering your repair to you. Please send us your full address for confirmation purposes within the next 7 days.”

Fine. I email them with my full address.

Nothing.

I call them today. The joycons never shipped again. Fine, please ship them now.
“Can we get your address again?”
Sure, why not. Here’s my address again.
“Excellent. We’ll send out an email confirming that they will ship shortly.”
Cool!

Ten minutes later I get an email saying there is an issue with my repair order, and to please call this specific number to talk to a supervisor. Fine.
Call the supervisor. They very politely say they will ship out the repaired joycons, or if they don’t find them they’ll send new ones.
“Can I confirm your mailing address?”
Please do.
“Name name, number number Maplewood Drive.”
No. Gods, no. MAPWOOD. I spell it out, they spell it back to me. I point out, as politely as I can, that this is now the fourth time I have corrected that earlier incorrect mailing address, and if you could please, please fix that because it’s getting incredibly frustrating.

I’m never getting those joycons back, am I?

PSA:
Big sale on steam on tons of stuff, the entire Dark Souls series is between 50-75% off…

Oh God, Crusader Kings 3 on sale

I am so sorry to hear about the frustrations with the joycons
I hope you’ll get them soon and will have tons of fun with your switch that’ll make you forget the starting issues.

I heard there are lots of issues with the joycons. It’s weird that the Switch has been out for years now and they still haven’t managed to get this under control.

Has anyone tried this?

Is this like the actual game or just a helper app? Looks like game to me not helper app. Price suggests it is, too. Is this a game that lends itself to being digitized? (I’ll never buy the boardgame until we’ve finished all of Gloomhaven or Frosthaven which is unlikely to happen in the next few years)

I doubt a helper app would cost that much. It must be a digital version of the game.

Assuming that I am going to try to play at least one of these eventually… where do I start?
PC? Switch? Which game? And I am not a completionist in such a case. If I were, obviously I would go back and start with the oldest game. But I’d much rather play one that has the formula polished.

I picked up Hearts of Iron 4 in the Steam sale. I’d best wave goodbye to my free time

In shapez.io I’ve got to the point of designing a machine to make anything…

Sounds cool. I enjoyed the demo, but I can’t imagine going that far.

Theoretically, this means you want Bloodborne. I’m not sure that’s true based on what you posted earlier though, since it eschews shields altogether. This kind of eliminates the careful, plodding style that @COMaestro mentioned earlier.

Dark Souls 3 is arguably the best of the series-proper, but it’s also probably the hardest and definitely has some of the most infuriating areas in the entire series. I argue that Dark Souls (1) is still the most special of the three, but it’s also aged the worst and the remastered version is riddled with unusual bugs.

This leads me to what will probably end up being a deeply unpopular opinion: Try starting with Dark Souls 2 (Remastered). It has several creature comforts over DS1, a less convoluted (albeit less interesting) world, and a variety of pathways to explore if you ever feel stuck. That said, I have no idea what the online support for this game looks like anymore, and it does like throwing mob style bosses at you.

And, just to fuzzy that up some more: I still think you should probably start with Dark Souls. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

That is a bit confusing  But thank you. It does help.

On Steam it says “strongly recommend using an xbox controller for the game” As I don’t have a controller for my pc (though that may yet change), I think I may go for Dark Souls Remastered on the Switch when the time comes. It is also for sale right now but Switch sales like Steam sales come and go all the time.

I can’t think of a single compelling reason to play the game without a controller. Waiting for switch is a good move.

It is not a helper app. it is a full PC game that they decided to do and give to all backers of the physical game to boot. It is also not a digital recreation of the boardgame. It is a PC game inspired by the boardgame. Right now I think it’s pretty much just a roguelike? They’ve said they do plan to implement a campaign (which will be different than the boardgame campaign so not cross-spoilery) and may have done some of that? But last I heard they were planning to spin that off as a separate application and purchase (also given to the backers and people who’d already bought in in EA) because they feel there are probably different audiences for the two modes. I haven’t actually messed with it because I try to stay clear of early access games, but I look forward to checking it out when it’s finally released. I have no idea how they are as videogame developers, but the boardgame is one of my favorites of all time.

If you are interested in something Gloomhaven like I can really recommend Trials of Fire. It is a lot of fun with smart gameplay offering a ton of tactical decisions

Damn, “Trials of Fire” looks great, but I have such a knee-jerk hatred of “Early Access Games”.

I don’t want the game early. I want it the moment it is done, and not one moment sooner.

I’ve added it to my Wishlist. We shall see.
