I’ve done that a few times. I figure probably everyone does, as often it just seems to depend on what you’re familiar with. My work team of 4 people plays Connections together each morning, and the other day I picked the set of 1960s band names (or rather, almost-names) out of the grid before anyone had made any other suggestions, and IIRC that turned out to be the purple set. I expect in that instance they decided that the majority of the audience would be too young to be very familiar with all four of those names; but if you do know them, then it might well be the easiest set.
Today’s purple connection is one I still haven’t really learned to look for despite something similar having cropped up a few times now.

I have not seen this film, but the first frame did bring The Black Freighter to mind (even though the lights seemed all kinds of wrong), and so my first guess was Watchmen :). I thought that made for a funny juxtaposition with the correct answer.

I knew it on the first one. I typed in the key word from the title Dalmatians and it didn’t come up as an option. I entered the title anyway and it was wrong. I tried again on the second image because I knew I was right and it worked changed 101 to spelled out. I’m unreasonably annoyed at this.
