What do you collect (other than boardgames)?

Took me a moment to realise that was a Lego set!

I have a LOT of Lego sets. I think I’d posted about some of them at the old SU&SD forum.

I just put together a small set today, the new “Everyone is Awesome” that was released 1 June to coincide with Pride month.

I might build a couple more small sets today and tomorrow. I have only these two days off in the middle of what is otherwise three straight weeks of 8 hour or more days of online essay scoring, and I need things to do that do not involve screens or reading. Lego and jigsaw puzzles fit the bill quite nicely.

I decided, after an emergency shop today, that I’m going to qualify myself for shoes. This is an enormous cheat, as I pretty explicitly ensure I only have one pair for a given use at any one time (no concept of a “working pair” for me—they’re all working!). So, yes, on the surface I’m arguing I’m a shoe collector on the basis that I need to get some seasonally.

But hear me out: shoe shopping is a proper event for me. I have problem feet from multiple angles, and they technically start at the knees. Furthermore I’m fairly tall, and have a very narrow footbed, with short achilles and shallow arches. To top it all off (without getting too specific), I run HOT and that manifests at the extremities.

Anyway, here’s the summer kicks. After a sizeable discount I’m still out just over $300 CAD on these things (they’re bloody sneakers). Mind the table dust. That thing was literally cleaned last night for gaming. Damned construction zone neighborhood.

I have things to say about the Vegan™ and EVA™ revolution within the footwear industry. But not now (or here).

I was digging through the office “junk room” and stumbled upon this WW2 RAF Mk. II reflector sight with case. The Bakelite illuminator housing is intact, as is the power cord (although it is frayed a bit at the junction). Pretty neat!

Our junk room is full of stuff with ‘blocked’ written on it. I throw that stuff out.

Nice find

I’ve just had an email to say that our work Christmas party is being replaced with a virtual cheese tasting this year (the cheese is real, but the talking about the cheese is done on Teams). I’d be happy with that every year!

Depending on how you get on with your coworkers, much easier to duck out early!

Had a virtual curry with my coworkers last Christmas and it was very good. I even made them all play code names.

Have you seen clips of cats or dogs pushing buttons that play recordings of words like, “outside”? My wife bought me a Fluent Pet kit. We have two dogs and I have focused on training one of them. He learned shake-a-paw faster than the other one did and he really wants me to throw a ball. I don’t bother separating them while training so I alternate between getting one to push a button and getting the other to sit, which she already knows. We’re making progress. If the 2nd dog takes too long to guess what I want the first one will put out his paw like, ahem, a teacher’s pet. “Oh! Oh! I know teacher. Pick me!”. He has actually hit a button this way a few times too. They can be very jealous of each other and there are small bits of cheese on the line.

As far as real progress I’ll declare victory when one of them is looking to confirm where a button is before hitting it. Hitting the button by accident is a good interim step and does make the sound part of action. I can’t help wondering about too many fake throws of the ball being the reason the dog watches my hand so closely. What do they say about karma?

I consider myself very lucky to have been present for the one fake throw stepson’s dog ever fell for. After that it’s been a Withering Look every time. (Collie/Huntaway cross, smartest dog I’ve met.)

I’m half tempted to try this with my cat, but I fear it would become another one of the dozens of partially completed projects lying around the house…

There are DIY versions of the buttons that I could have started and likely would have enjoyed. But, yes, I might not have finished them. Adding the “ball” button to the existing daily game of fetch has been fairly simple. Also there can be a sort of ritual or exercise aspect to it… Ok, deep breath. I resolve to be extra patient for the next 10 minutes of frustrating repetition. Seeing slow, steady progress helps.

Bladder stones. And I still have the first blood sample I drew in a drawer above my desk.

Are they all your bladder stones?
