Doesnt ring a bell. Kon did Millennium Actress and Perfect Blue
Aaargh, I’ve going to the Prince Charles cinema a lot this year and thought I’d be busy tonight, ended up being free but didn’t know Paprika was on! I’ve been meaning to watch it for years.
Also, this is how you do a dream movie, Inception should have been 100x weirder.
I was thinking of “Sky Crawlers” by Oshii. I forgot that the cloned soldier children are called “Kildren” (Kill-dolls in Japanese).
Wild movie. But not as good as Paprika by a long shot. But good. But also definitely too dark.
I’ve been eyeing a number of films there in the next months. They have Tokyo Godfathers on December, on theme for Christmas!
Fantastic film with an awesome soundtrack. The opening song is so damn catchy!
I was in the office today so i watched Ghost in the Shell
Watched the final Mission Impossible film. That is the absolute worst script of any major movie of the last 5 years, holy crap.

As you were, carry on.
Going back to The Bear, on Disney. It’s a weird mix. Sold (and award winning) as a comedy, but it’s mostly a drama about the personalities of people who deliberately put themselves into high pressure situations and push themselves unrelentingly by choice. In this case the high pressure situation is a restaurant kitchen.
Some great character moments, and there’s no escalations, no world destroying planetary weapons, no taking on muggers in series one and South American Drug Cartels in series 3 (Yes, The Rookie, I’m still looking at you!).
And generally, there are no bad guys. Just good guys with conflicting aims.
Definitely worth a look. I’m working my way through season 4, having taken a long break after season 3.
My wife found it too stressful and so we stopped watching it.
Yeah - I can definitely see that. There’s been episodes where I’ve said ‘that’s enough for tonight’ because I think the stress level is only going to rise.
OTOH, if you both enjoyed it bar the stress, I can really recommend S2E7: Forks. It’s the antithesis of stress, and it’s a lovely bit of TV.
I just finished the first season of Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed on Apple TV+. The end includes a setup for a second season, but it has not been announced yet.
It has received good reviews overall, but I have a difficult time recommending it. It is a thriller with blackmail, murder, a child custody hearing, and personal drama with plenty of compelling moments. My wife was half-watching it on the couch next to me. It wasn’t until we got to episode 5 (of 10) that she demanded we watch the next one that night and then finish the last 3 the next evening. The tradecraft and police investigation was interesting (like how they rightfully come to the wrong conclusions).
But none of the characters are all that likable. The main protagonist does really dumb things. Some of them you can chalk up to panic and not thinking clearly, but others answer the question, “why is she doing this?” with “because she’s the protagonist in a thriller.” Being a fact checker for a magazine is an interesting hook for a character who had the skills to do her own sleuthing, but her follow-up actions only make things worse. The sidekick coworkers are more annoying than endearing despite their back-and-forth banter. There’s really only 1 likable character and she has her own problem (which is realistic, I guess?).
The episodes are shorter than average, coming in at under 40 minutes, so it’s relatively easy to digest. There are enough twists and nuances that it rewards your full attention, but it also does too many things that take you out of the story thinking, “that’s not how that works” or “that makes no sense outside of screenplay logic.”
Just took a glance at a very bad direct-to-video sequel to an already very bad film. “That guy looks familiar, they’re obviously making him look like Sean Bean. I wonder who… oh wow, it’s actual Sean Bean.” (Yes, this is several years after the Lord of the Rings films.)
I always thought Sean Bean didn’t look how I expected him to look on 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, which I now realise is because it’s actually Adam Riches :).
His episodes are: s11e5, s13e1, s18e7, s20e2.
A far more appropriate name for this very, very average action movie would be How Many Times Can A Character Say Leatherman the Movie.
I wouldn’t even use it as inspiration for Outgunned.
How about Gaslands? ![]()
I mean, I wasn’t exactly holding out hope it was going to be a classic…
Once in a while a film built on a big licence is enjoyable at more than a visceral level. Clue (Cluedo) for example. But I suspect that even more than usually in film there are money men looking over the makers’ shoulders saying “don’t do anything even slightly outside Film As Expected”.
Nor was I, let’s face it Matchbox…hmm it’ll be about cars then, but I was expecting a less embarrassing amount of product placement.
