Binged all of Dark, and it was, well, dark. Haven’t seen much of any German TV, and it was impressive in how it all tied together. Kind of got lost in season 3 though, too many threads to keep track of.

We watched the 90s season of Berserk which is just 25 episodes.
We had to switch to Japanese after a few episodes: the English spoken didn’t match the subtitles (a very common occurrence even now) and a main character voice drove me up the wall … (Griffith, if anyone cares)
Overall this held up remarkably well, I suppose I should read the manga. The anime was already so beautiful and had some very nice still shots that I assume are taken directly from the manga.
The soundtrack is very noticably 90s.
Lots and lots of blood. I don’t mind somehow.
And then it ends… very suddenly. No real conclusion.
We’re going to watch the new anime next. Maybe in English, I have seen one episode at some point because the English VA for Guts has had a bunch of other roles (Satoru Gojou of Jujutsu Kaisen & Jinshi of Apothecary Diaries - >Kaiji Tang - MyAnimeList.net
That one episode I was very very very confusing without having seen the old episodes. I wonder if it is better now.
(We have finished S1 of Attack on Titan, but I needed a break from it. It’s good. But even more brutal than Berserk)

I really liked the manga! It goes through some peaks and troughs but the Golden Age stuff is really good. I’ll have to watch the anime, I’ve heard good things about the early stuff.

In all fairness, something trained to say exactly what the statistical average of people want to hear, while not understanding any of it, sounds remarkably like a successful politician.

Large Language Models, popularly referred to as ‘AIs’, actually work by predicting the most likely word to come next, by referring to its training data, consisting of scraped text from everywhere on the Internet. Normally that produces what statistically average people want to hear, but the more data on you personally stored with it, the better it can say what you want to hear. At no point is any intelligence involved.
This process is very like a successful politician, whose training data consist largely of opinion polls.

‘In this age of AI’; the only way to have President Bartlett from the West Wing as the President of the United States of America would be to have an LLM imitating the fictional President Bartlett installed as President, after a Supreme Court ruling, possibly made by judges who still print out their emails, which established that an LLM made by an American company, on American servers, counted as a ‘natural born citizen’.

Just started watching Blue Eyed Samurai on Netflix - I don’t usually watch manga but I had a long boring train ride yesterday and it had popped up in my recommendations a few times. Most of the first episode done and it’s a lot of fun - a half Japanese half western kid learns kenjutsu while being a legendary sword smith’s apprentice then seeks his revenge against the only 4 westerners in Japan at that time - one of whom must therefore have been his father.
Will he succeed? Tune in next week …
