I watched one YouTuber who has some friends in the agent business. The rumor he heard was Disney wants to do something with the series, Fillion was all on board but was too busy with his schedule. But now The Rookie is becoming more of an ensemble cast so it’s not as reliant on him, plus the Guy Gardner role in the DC films is planned to be less prominent, so his schedule is a bit open now.
Disney are desperate for a new franchise they can milk for cash. Firefly fans have been begging for more for decades. Even movie executives catch on, eventually.
Okay, this works well. Age of the actors is now irrelevant so the space between the series and the film can be fleshed out, or stories from even further in the past can be explored.
Only issue is Shepherd Book. Will they just do the time frame after he left the ship or recast?
Ok, fair enough. All those people who care more than is healthy about Firefly can watch this; people who think Firefly’s great, and wish they’d made more of it at the time, but haven’t spent the last twenty-plus years waiting for news like this, can happily ignore this and carry on watching the original series (I’m in that second group, in case there was doubt!).
I don’t think an animated series set at about the same time as the original stuff really justifies those dramatic little teasers though.
I’m not displeased, I’m just not very interested. I’d have been intrigued (to say the least) by a live-action thing (reboot? sequel? reimagining?) with the original cast, and would certainly have wanted to watch it. But not this. Although tbh I have very little interest in animation (unless it’s Ghibli), so I’m almost certainly very much not representative of the target audience for this.
I assume most reaction is either “Hell yeah, shiny AF, can’t wait!” or “This will be an abomination, and an insult to all browncoats.”
Mine’s fairly middling. Loved the original series, have rewatched it a couple of times and will probably give this a chance but not going to lose any sleep over it
That’s just hater talk. They were “little teasers,” not a full teaser trailer. Instead of having a slick sheen of corporate media, they were… odd and awkward tbh. So, what do you think would “justify” them? Certainly a live action show would have justified more effort and budget but behind the teasers.
The cast, from what I have seen, all have a love and fondness for this show. The two show runners were involved with the CW’s Arrowverse (which had some highs and some lows) and with the Agent Carter series (which I have not seen), and are a married couple who met due to Firefly, so I at least believe they have a love of the series as well.
I am a regular anime watcher, so to me animation is just as good as live action as long as the story is good.
A huge amount of what I liked about Firefly was the acting and the likeability of the cast. I seriously doubt that charisma comes as well through without the actors on camera and I think I’ll find it harder to empathise with the characters in cartoon form than as portrayed by adorable, beautiful and/or very expressive, funny and well-cast actors.
So, I will probably give it a try, if it appears on some form of streaming I have, but it’s not as good news as a new live-action series. It’s better news than a reboot with other actors, though.
There’s probably no form of “teaser” which would not have caused disappointment for fans hoping for something different to whatever it actually was. (The only thing which could have made everyone happy requires a time machine.)
You’re clearly not one to take my clear statement that I have no hate for this project at face value, so it hardly seems worth saying it again. And it would be hard for me to phrase it in a more easily understood way for you.
As for your somewhat snarky questions - it seems only polite to answer them, seeing as you went to the trouble of asking them:
That’s right - I don’t really think it’s worth making these quirky little teasers about. Quirky little animated teasers? Maybe.
What level of attention? As far as I’m concerned, not much. As far as some others are concerned, loads. Good for them, and I hope they enjoy the series if it gets made.
My journey with this went from ‘Oh, are they making new Firefly stuff? Firefly’s one of my favourite ever programmes; this could be interesting,’ to ‘Oh, it’s an animated series. The actors are just doing the voices. That doesn’t really interest me.’
I guess you can call that hate. But it seems something of a stretch.
Anyway, this isn’t what I come to this forum for; there’s a whole rest of the internet for snippy arguments and personal insults. So I’m out.
