I’d have been happier if this was longer.
I watched season 2 of The Last of Us over the weekend and it was fine.
I’ve seen some of the reaction by the “fans” and I was expecting it to be awful.
Caveat being I’ve never played the games.
Still watching One Piece, currently Episode 930+ something. I really have no idea what we do in another 220-ish episodes when we’re done…?!
I watched Sugar Apple Fairy Tale–a story about a young female protagonist who wants to become a “silver sugar master” (making artwork from sugar). This is based on a Lightnovel and the anime seems to cover a little over half of the volumes of the novel. I found this as a recommendation for people who enjoyed Apothecary Diaries and / or Ascendancy of a Bookworm. While the latter two are much more fascinating, this one is a good fit, if you ran out of the other two
and need some Ersatz.
I also started watching To Your Eternity. (yet another anime)
I have watched 7 or so episodes and it is bleak. Cheery in some scenes but that seems mostly to emphasize the bleakness.
The premise is that there is a power that is thrown by some “creator” to some fantasy planet and the power has 2 abilities: mimic something and revive after death. And each episode progresses slowly to how the power learns to mimic something or someone new. It starts as a stone. Then moss, then a wolf/dog… it evolves very slowly and so far almost exclusively through sad experiences. I am not sure I can finish it.
Saw a similar thing on bluesky for reading (see 'What are you reading).
Five directors I’ve watched at least five films by:
Alfred Hitchcock
Kathryn Bigelow
Taika Waititi
Adam Curtis
John Huston
The first names that came to mind:
- Alfred Hitchcock
- Terry Gilliam
- David Lynch
- Michael Powell
- David Fincher
(I’ve thought of several more before submitting, but that’ll do :).
Bonus: A director I’ve watched five films by starring the same leading actors:
- Mark Sandrich (who directed 5 of the Astaire and Rogers films)
Edit: I’d better add Peter Jackson for a NZ entry. I count 8 films even if I include LOTR as one film, and ignore the one part I saw of The Hobbit entirely :).
Sam Raimi, who comes to mind because Red Letter Media is currently doing a 3-part video ranking of his movies.
Likewise, John Carpenter.
Also:
Hayao Miyazaki
Steven Spielberg
Ron Howard
(Trying to pick directors not already listed above)
It’s mainstream, but the first three I know for certain and that haven’t been mentioned much are:
Ridley Scott
James Cameron
John Hughes
Spielberg on the Indy films alone
John Carpenter definitely
A few not yet mentioned:
George Lucas
Wim wenders
Werner herzog
Les Blank
Errol Morris
(In college, the other film series (which showed somewhat less mainstream film, as opposed to the sanctioned one, which was very mainstream) showed _heaven’s gate _. I called the rental house and got a print of _Werner Herzog eats his shoe _, and spliced it in front of that. The first showing had a very confused audience…)
Hitchcock
Powell & Pressburger
David Lean
Sergio Leone
Hayao Miyazaki
Gosh - this does rather make me sound like a bit of a film buff. Maybe I am.
Raimi
Wright
Romero
Verhoeven
Tarantino
Some I’ve watched at least 5 of that haven’t been mentioned:
Guillermo Del toro
Martín Scorsese
Christopher Nolan
Ridley Scott
Mel Brooks
Directors I’ve watched at least five films of that haven’t been mentioned:
- Danny Boyle
- Paul Greengrass
- Takeshi Kitano
- Harold Ramis
- Tony Scott
And three I’m surprised to find that I’ve only seen four of their films:
- Alfonso Cuaron
- Gareth Evans
- Ben Wheatley
Orson Welles
Juzo Itami
Akira Kurosawa
Stephen Spielberg
Sam Pekinpah
No mentions of two that I know I qualify for because I’ve reviewed said films: George Miller and John McTiernan.
I adore this film although it has been slightly tarnished by discovering it’s the current US president’s favourite film.
Just off to the BFI to use one of my free membership tickets to see the new 4k restoration of Hard Boiled.
More like ‘Big Mac and Me’
Holy crap, I forgot about this movie. I saw a screening of this back in elementary school because someone involved with the film, maybe the producer, was the father of a kid in my class, so he had given the class passes to see it. I remember virtually nothing of the film, so you can tell what a huge impact it had on me. ![]()
Edit: Yep, he was the producer.
