What are you watching?

I’ve started watching Severance. 2 episodes in but I’m hooked and slightly nervous it will go rubbish like Lost did. But very much enjoying so far.

I’m hoping that they have a set number of series planned and Apple will see the sense in letting it reach a conclusion. And, unlike Lost, I really hope they actually know how it should end and what the mystery is all about.

Streaming services don’t seem to have the same “mik it for all its worth” mantra of commercial, network television and seem more likely to cut a show prematurely than to let it drag on for too long.

Thanks in part to comments here, I’ve been dipping my toes into anime again, and I’m enjoying Ameku Takao no Suiri Karte aka “what if House, but she’s younger and doesn’t have the painkilker addiction”. It’s all rather silly and good fun.

Calling all my science geeks. This is one of the best things I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching, and I know you’ll enjoy it too:

The amount of work that went into making this video is really impressive.

I still remember a physics lab as an undergrad trying to create a transmission hologram and mostly failing. It was the first and only time I’ve had to develop film, use a darkroom, etc.

They did let Ted Lasso, one of their most successful series (if not the most successful), reach a conclusion in 3 seasons, so I fairly high confidence that they will allow Severance do similar.

Although they are now making a 4th Ted Lasso series…

That’s (potentially) disappointing. I guess it depends on whether they are doing it because the creators had a good new idea, or because Apple sent them enough truckloads of cash…

Well they say its because they’ve had an idea but… :man_shrugging:

An idea how to spend a truckload of cash.

Granted, the last episode was weak. So an opportunity to fix it is welcome.

If anyone has spare truckloads of cash, I have plenty of ideas…

I disagree, i liked the final episode. Thought it wrapped it all up nicely

Oh, I liked it too. But I do think it was a very weak episode.

So Ted just decides to abandon Beard? He couldn’t delay his flight for a day, a week, he couldn’t make it back to London for his wedding? Ridiculous. The whole relationship triangle with Roy, Jamie, and Keeley? Just… not at all dealt with? Just a shrug and “I guess they’ll figure it out”? And don’t get me started on the whole relationship with Ted’s ex-wife. Gods, what a stumble. For a show that usually is so kind and so human to have so many inhuman elements to that finale…

But I did like the Rebecca conclusion. And overall it was still fun, but compared to the quality and heart of the rest of the show… weak.

YMMV, of course. But it felt like it was written by “somebody else.”

Re-watched O Brother, Where Art Thou? last night. Controversial, I know, but I think it’s my favourite Coen Brothers movie. Funny, touching, slightly weird.

And I think some of my American cousins need to see how ridiculous it makes the KKK look…

That shouldn’t be controversial - it’s a great little film!

Better than The Big Lebowski?

A Coen Bros directed-but-not-written film that I love which (to my bafflement) does seem slightly controversial, is Intolerable Cruelty.

I adore classic Hollywood “screwball comedies”, and this film is a modern take on those delights, with dialogue and comic timing to die for. The leads are so good in the roles, and the film is so very funny… and yet lots of people seem to really dislike it.

I can see how some might prefer it.
