What are you watching?

Watched Good Omens 2 this weekend. Not as good as the first, but I wasn’t expecting it to be. Much less of a plot than the original. More light fun with characters than anything. Enjoyed it for what it was. Gaiman has said the planned third one will be more Armageddon-y like the first, but this was necessary to setup the third one. There is a line at the very end that hints at this. Hopefully we get the third one and it is more substantial.

I actually prefer that to a Big World-Ending Plot. The same is true for rpgs. Maybe it’s just me.

I need to get around to this, but honestly if I recall my comments from season 1, I would happily watch David Tennant and Michael Sheen just shopping for groceries in character for a full season and consider it time well spent!

I agree with this assessment of S2 though S1 wasn’t perfect by any means. We binged through it and a pleasant time was had by all.

Very much the same!

The two of them together in Staged was equally watchable

We watched a bit of 3% too, we kept the Portuguese voices and English subtitles. It was fine but we stopped at some point.

We got really into The Office (US) which is very funny while awkward and embarrassing :see_no_evil: but great fun.

And we watch some The Rookie because one of my students really wanted me to, so we did and it is a good enough show.

But Only Murders in the Building is back which is great. Looking forward to that

During a recent bout of insomnia (Who needs sleep?), I managed to finish the last two episodes of Ms. Marvel and the entirety of She-Hulk.

Ms. Marvel was disappointing, not because it was “bad,” but because the first few episodes were great, and the last two were… fine? They were fine. The final fight scene was just outright stupid (the Home Alone at School nonsense), but I think I was really only disappointed because they seem to have lost track of what they were doing at some point and that’s a dang shame. Kamela Khan is delightful, but I have difficulty imagining her in the same universe as, like… Thanos. And Kang.

She-Hulk was mostly very, very good, with moments of brilliance. The final fight scene, again, was… weak. The 4th wall breaking I am 100% okay with and it really added a lot to the show (and I’m now really curious to see what will happen when/if She-Hulk meets Deadpool), and even the scene where she meets Kevin… but I dunno. While I agree with all the points Jen made about why the original ending wasn’t good, I also think that they were hinting at and building up to that ending, and the new one just, kinda… came outta nowhere.

Was lovely to see her and her new beau, though. Big fan of that power couple. I hope it lasts!

I like that they gave her proper 4th-wall breaking powers like she had in the old Sensational series. Taking advantage of the fact it’s on Disney+, so she could interact with the interface the same way she used to “rip through” comic pages and you’d see the next page beneath.

The Bear on Disney+. What a great show!

Just finished two seasons of Shadow and Bone on Netflix. I don’t know what to do with my life now. Maybe read the Grishaverse novels.

Also watched The Big Short. I learnt about the GFC via the boring and hard way - reading about it. I should have watched this one instead.

We’re up to season 2 now, and enjoying it quite a lot for the most part. There are things I wish they’d done differently, but it’s a pretty fun watch.

I think Christina Ricci’s character Misty must be a lot of fun to play for both the actors! (The story regularly flips between past and present.)

I’m glad Melanie Lynskey is doing well, too. After Heavenly Creatures I only recall ever seeing her in a handful of things, but imdb shows a big long list and it sounds like she’s featured in a bunch of well-known TV shows in recent years.

We watched Dune yesterday (the 2021 version). Now I understand a lot more of the references in the board games and the jokes in the SUSD review.

Dune is great. Saw the trailer for part 2 last night—at the movies! Yes, we took a break from moving to go see Oppenheimer in English at the local IMAX before they stop showing the OG version and we would have to see it in German translation.

Very Nolan.
Who also just needs to snap his fingers and get everyone running to be in his movies? Or am I just that old, that I know so many actors from having seen so much stuff …

5fth row in the IMAX is a little bit too far at the front.

The movie gave me some „Malazan but with scientists“ vibes. Too many confusing characters I couldn‘t remember the names of, good amount of backstabbing. The non-linear story-telling while good didn‘t always help my following the plot easily. Add to that that I don‘t know the history of that era on the American side of the pond very well, 1 year of American history in highschool (in Michigan) barely got me to know who McCarthy was.

As a story though I quite enjoyed the movie. Glad we got to see it on the big screen.
Can‘t wait for Dune 2.

We also saw Murder Mystery 1 + 2 (Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler) which was the best „funny“ movies Netflix could come up with (to a weird set of sub-criteria but really netflix has a ton of stuff I will never want to see). They were reasonably ok. Including of course the typical Sandler humor that is fingernägelhochrollendes Fremdschämmaterial through and through. I really liked Aniston though.

Oh and of course we got started on the new season of Only Murders in the Building. I was so pleasantly surprised to see Meryl Streep. So Steve Martin humor is also … sometimes I have to leave the room. But delicious mystery. Funny how I don‘t enjoy reading mysteries but there seems to be a current trend of them in moving picrtures and I really like watching those.

I’d suggest Wes Anderson & Quentin Tarrantino, but it’s also a case them and Nolan that they have attracted a stable of actors for their projects.

You are not the first making this connection

It was a very good movie, but also a sad one.

I watched Asteroid City which was just a little disappointing. I like Wes Anderson films generally, apart from The Royal Tenenbaums, but this one lacked something. Lots of good little moments but never came together.

Also watched Oppenheimer, really quite impressed. Some pointless abstract scenes that seemed to be unneeded filler (but arty) but very few.

The Dreams in Gary’s Basement, finally. Worth a watch if you are interested in the history of the RPG hobby (which I am).

Where is that showing?

I’m not sure where it is physically showing (I know they showed it at some Cons in the states). I watched it online at their site because I kickstarted it. Sorry, not a lot of help.
