What are you reading?

Finished Oathbringer and Part 1 of Rhythm of War (Stormlight 4). Still engrossed into it. Sad to learn that Stormlight 6 won’t be around until 2031 :frowning: :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

Dont equate Brando with GRRM. :joy::joy:

Seems that he’s taking a break from Stormlight and focus on Elantris and Skyward sequels

This guy is a machine and doesnt sleep at all.

No. Never.

Also don’t compare them :stuck_out_tongue: Only one of them likes to torture his readers.

He’s finished a 5 book arc in a wider story that will be 10 books. So he has kinda reached a conclusion so good time to break.

I was very much into Red Rising when I read the first book. Really liked it. But then the intrigues got more convoluted book by book and I couldn’t take it serious anymore. I know your plan will fail because someone betrays you but no worries you betray them back etc. etc.

It just got a bit too much of that imo.

I thought he was writing the third mistborn arc.

Just finished sunlit man it was good but very full on cosmere. Beware spoilers.

Summary

Wasn’t sure that the reveal of the protagonist name had the punch it was expected to have, but the bridge 4 moment did hit in the feels. Also the time line of all of this next to existing books made my head hurt. It’s clearly the distant future but I’ve never really got the timeline between wax and Wayne and stormlight sorted out.

Taking a break from Babylon’s Ashes to go through this beast:

A bit under half-way through, it’s brilliant. VERY heavy book, like, physically, it’s around 1,000 pages!

I stopped reading Stormlight years ago, couldn’t get through book 4 for some reason, it is still on my list. But I heard reception for Wind and Truth was very mixed.

Opinions on Wind and Truth inside. Probably don’t read if you are about to read the book. I don’t want to “infect” anyone with my reaction.

Caveat: I’ve been diving so much into Manga and Anime recently which is SOOOO different that some of me having a hard time with Epic Fantasy my stem from that…

On thing I noticed the other day when I was trying to read it is that chapters are quite short or rather not chapters but POV segments. There is a lot of switching between POVs of Shallan, Kaladin, Lift, Renarin that I am having trouble sticking with it for long and also keeping track of what a character was doing last time I met them. Because I am not “devouring” it in one big gulp, but rather in small increments that makes it worse.

What I have appreciated so far was Shallan’s story. There is something going on with her that I find quite nice to read about. This is a Spoiler-Spoiler (do not click if you care about being surprised): The spren that maker up her armor are super-cute and especially when listening to the audiobook I just have to smile everytime the armor appears.

Personally, I am a bit tired of the various mental health issues plagueing several of the main characters. I know it’s important as a topic but it is starting to get in the way of the actual story and not as well integrated as it should be. More Selbstzweck than plot device?

I want to read epic-epic fantasy and the plot is moving forward incredibly slowly but it doesn’t have to be. But then the pacing for anime episodes is the exact opposite so that needs to be considered in my reaction. And yet… I am about 300/1200 pages into the book and nothing much has happened.

In addition it’s been years since I’ve read Rhythm of War. I am noticing when lalunaverde is telling me about the reading experience of previous books how much I have forgotten. And I just don’t have the reading stamina right now to start the series from scratch again as I did for Words of Radiance & Oathbringer. For Rhythm of War I already didn’t do that.

The most interesting-to-me part is concerning stuff from the Sunlit Man which is not actually part of the series.

Pat Wrede has pointed out that there’s an intrinsic problem with a multiple viewpoint story: almost always, one of them will become the reader’s favourite (even if the author balances them perfectly), and every time the narrative switches away from that it’s a small let-down.

I don’t actually have a favorite anymore. Though the characters that do get more screen-time are certainly more interesting to read about.

It’s more about favorite sub-plot probably

After a week away without much reading I finished the last few chapters of Exodus: Archimedes Engine by Peter F. Hamilton.

It’s a tie in for an upcoming RPG that I’ve heard nothing about but is apparently similar to Mass Effect.

Not quite as many interweaving plots as his usual books, but jeez there were a lot of characters to keep track of. Plus some FTL-based timey-wimey stuff.

I’ve just finished The Tomb of Dragons, third in the Cemeteries of Amalo series (Sarah Monette writing as Katherine Addison). Wow. Very much character-driven, intriguing mysteries, faction fighting, and a really interesting world. Read it, read the whole series, read The Goblin Emperor first for an introduction to the world.

It was phenomenal, yeah. Really really enjoyed it. Enough that I read the whole thing in two sittings. The hardest part was that it hurt my wrists to hold it, LOL
