Traveller (Mongoose)

The model I’d like to try is:

  • generate characters in Traveller
  • set a campaign point budget in GURPS
  • build each character to that budget, using the Traveller ones as inspiration but not expecting exact accuracy, and indeed adding or dropping stuff as needed.

Basically, I think GURPS is a better system, but I really love Traveller Character Generation. I’m not sure it would need to be balanced, as the randomness is part of the fun, although it leads to the risk of getting a duff character at the end.

Create your characters in GURPS.

Everyone folds their character sheets into the classic paper aeroplane pattern.

Throw your characters through a burning Hula-hoop.

If they get through intact, congratulations! You survived character generation!

Well, Jon’s character generation is on record. And I’ve been playing in another game in which one player definitely got screwed over by the dice. As far as I’m concerned, while randomness can be useful for giving me suggestions, I very much prefer to pick the character elements I’m going to play with.
