I have played it 19 times since getting it and I love it. It plays great as a solo. I would agree about the expansions (Animals good, campfire-adventure people less good) and the hubris issues. Especially the goals drive me to regrettable decisions.
The main thing how to get better at the game is to be humble and go for realistic loops. I had it happen several times that I did not get any of the paths I needed to even close my backup loops on the last draft. And that is not the game‘s fault.
