It’s almost even better than that; If I exclude expansions:
Sell a game, buy an expansion. Easy.
I’m a little fuzzy on exactly went last year but I’m in a very pleasing place with my collection just now. I have 76 games with 2 in the sell pile currently.
This last year saw me step up the dropping of 18xx titles. It took some bravery to move on titles I liked a lot but 1862 just didn’t make top 10 so instead of keeping 12 I went brave. No regrets still.
Other titles to go were Pipeline, Steam punk Rally, the Plum Island Horror and Horseless Carriage. None I think are bad games but also wouldn’t get played enough for me to want to keep them in the face of dwindling game time. Except Plum Island which got stale very quickly. First game exciting, second game decided to sell. Little depth, less variety.
This leads to me thinking that 22 & 23 were the bigger cull years. That being said I’m now largely very happy with what I have and barring the 2 on the sell pile I couldn’t easily choose something to sell. Having mostly stopped buying games is particularly good for the psychological peace with my collection. Some games aren’t great but have some nostalgia but that’s ok I think. Hopefully I can keep 2025 to only buying the grail game I already purchased a d stay peaceful.
I culled the following last year:
Not up to snuff/Not my Jam:
Skulk Hollow - Meh
Trekking Through History - Lighter than I was hoping for
51st State Master Set - Never clicked with my group
Ready, Set, Bet - I can see this being really fun in the right setting, but it fell flat for us on multiple game nights
Bandida - Blah
Mass Transit - Beat it once, no need to beat it again
Mr Jack - Meh
In the Hall of the Mountain King -I liked this game, but it doesn’t do anything particularly special, and there are so many other medium weight 2h games I’d rather table
Brew - Better than anticipated, but ultimately too light for my tastes
Blackout: Hong Kong - Loved the hand management, disliked the scavenging mechanic. I’d love to see the hand management replicated in another game
Raiders of Scythia - I really like how the worker placement mechanic works here, but again the game around it is pretty meh IMO
Seasons of Rice - Meh
I have Similar Games I Prefer:
Seastead - I have way too many small box 2p games
Haven - see above
Tikal - I choose Mexica
Cuzco - see above
Shards of Infinity - I have the app, although these days I’d rather play Slay the Spire or Balatro
Cthulhu Wars: Duel - I picked up the real deal
Gave Up on it Before it Ever Got Played:
Space Alert - This looks really fun, but it’s just too much overhead
Unforgiven: The Lincoln Assassination - I got a deal I couldn’t refuse
Auf Falscher Fahrte - I have too many tricktakers
Night of the Ninja - I have too many social deduction games
Colonial Twilight - Too much overhead. Might try again with A Gest of Robin Hood or The British Way whose themes appeal more
My collection continues to grow despite all attempts at culling. I may have to make some more painful decisions this year.
