Through the Hedgerow

A lovely looking game and I really like the background concept. It reminds me of a multitude of children’s fantasy works in book, radio, film and TV form that I enjoyed and enjoy. However, the system seems to be absolutely bonkers. I’m not exactly new to RPGing but I’m finding it hard to get my head around it. My trusty rules expert friend Ant explained to me in detail his analysis of the up to 19 parts of a challenge that you could still lose or have to start again.
Perhaps I’ll try to convert it to another system.

Well after long delays for all sorts of IRL reasons we finally played our first session. It went well enough but there were a lot of pauses to check the rules.
I can understand what Jonathan Rowe is trying to do to deemphasise combat and increase drama but I’m not convinced it works nor that the complexity of the challenge system actually assists in meeting the drama aim.
Thankfully we haven’t gotten to rewards yet as the players are unlikely to be happy with the fact that you are a) unlikely to get a reward you want and b) quite unlikely to get one at all.
Still we shall persevere.

Game two went okay. Slightly less looking up of rules but slight frustration with one rule being in neither of the two places it should be given its name and purpose.
I expect a minor revolution on my hands next week as the party discover that they cannot take the treasures they have acquired in the adventure back to their home ages with them but rather have to find somewhere to hide them or someone to entrust them to so they can access them in their future ages. I’m not sure how this rule on treasures works if your home age is in the past and you get a treasure in the future, you can’t take it back with you but you can’t really hide it in the future so you can access it in the past. I guess it just limits what treasures you can have access to depending what age the game is set in.
Players always love being told they can’t access their stuff

We finished the last adventure I wrote and decided to give ourselves an early Christmas present by not playing it again.

Lovely background, awful mechanics.

May convert to BRP if we ever return to it.
