This review (and the podcast) made me REALLY want this game, at least until the “potential negative” section at 10 mins. Would be interested to hear people’s experiences with it once it gets played a bit.
Also Matt is quite unhinged in this even by SUSD standards.
@lalunaverde and I played a few games of this on BGA and I enjoyed them thoroughly, to the point I bought the game, but haven’t played my copy. I had two games as Van Helsing and one as Dracula, won the Dracula game and one of the VH ones.
Haven’t watched the review yet to know the “potential negatives” listed. I know there was mention in the podcast that it felt like Dracula had a bit of an advantage since if the game ends at the end of the fifth round, he wins, but we didn’t have that happen in our games. Sure, three is a small sampling, but it’s what I’ve got. As VH, you have 25 chances to do damage and Dracula only has 12 HP. The soonest Dracula can instant win is after round 4, so as VH, you can potentially win before Dracula even has a chance to do so. So I don’t know. It didn’t feel like there was that much imbalance to me.
Yep, that was the only negative, same as the podcast.
In terms of gameplay this sounds very much like my thing.
I never had a case of the game ending after 5 rounds
So I watched the review. I noticed Matt said Dracula had 14 health. However, according to the instructions he only has 12. I makes me wonder if the game comes with two extras as replacements in case some get damaged. I will need to check my copy. If using all 14, I could see how the game might feel imbalanced towards Dracula.
Edit: Nope, my copy only has 12 health tokens. So I am guessing Matt just misremembered.
