Hmm. I want to argue a lot here, only not completely.

Clearly there is a generation gap, but I don’t think it’s as simple as “people a generation older than Matt being fascinated by the war” - in my upbringing in the 1970s-1980s it was barely mentioned, and I only developed any real knowledge of it when I started running an RPG set there in 2007.

The impression I get is that Matt’s arguing that detail in wargames is a social aid, a conversation-starting way of saying “oh well this modifier is because [historical fact]” and “ah, but what about [historical fact]” and so on – and that’s not generally true of the wargamers I’ve met, even the strictly historical ones, though it can certainly be a thing. In my preferred wargaming genre of missile-era naval, one additional piece of data added to the very small existing set can potentially make quite a large change…
