?! I really have no idea what you are talking about… but my first thought was: if alternate doesn’t have it…
But they are a German shop. And I do not even know if these are related to the products you are looking for.
But if they are maybe the current product / model names can be helpful?
It’s the actual PCI-express controller card I’m after.
I can ask my BiL he would know–German addresses…
This? DeLOCK 16 Port SATA PCI Express x4 Karte, Controller
Right ballpark, but only 16 ports not 24, and the sockets are single SATA/SAS not SFF-8087s (which each get you 4 SATA/SAS channels on one plug/cable).
(Because I’m running ZFS I don’t want a RAID card, just something that’ll let me attach a whole bunch of discs.)
There are more types where that came from. But I am afraid this particular shop doesn’t deliver to UK anyway. My thinking was: get the specific product you want from them plug it into search and find UK shop that carries the stuff.
We bought most of the contents for our new setup at the house from them… and they’ve like always been one of 2 goto places. And with always I mean… feels like I shopped stuff there even before 2000. No such places in UK?
I promised a picture😇

Lots of places that will sell 8- or 16-port cards with a different connector. Second-best option I’ve found so far is adaptor cables and a different (unknown) card; best is to order old stock from China. This stuff used to be in stock with all the component-shifters…

Incidentally, fvo “failed” = “only shows the OS one of the three slabs of 8 discs”. Before this morning it would occasionally report no discs present at all at reboot, but this only-one-slab is new.
Of course I can’t be sure it’s a faliing card. Power looks OK and should be plentiful, but…

I don’t recall all of the specifics, but I used one of the popular-amongst-homelab LSI 9211-8i HBA flashed to IT-mode (initiator-target) which presents the drives individually with no RAID functions.
Then I coupled that with a SAS expander card that I seated in my disk shelf that provided 3x SFF-8087. The expander card itself was cabled to the HBA with a SFF-8088->SFF-8087 adapter card.
I should mention that FreeBSD’s ZFS sometimes has trouble seeing all of the drives, but I think that’s on the particular drives rather than the card setup. The drives in that shelf are really old 500G SATA2 drives that I actually no longer need.
But typing this up made me realize I do want to trash those drives and start expanding my storage onto this shelf again.
EDIT: the expander’s SFF-8087 ports are cabled with SATA breakout cables, because the disk backplane in that shelf is individual SATA

Look for sff8643 (think that’s the right number) instead of 8087. It’s electrically equivalent, just different shape and size.
The reason you can’t find this is it’s obsolete for high end use. Just old stuff, and cost optimized low end stuff.

Thanks - so I should be able to get converter cables to plug into the 8087s on my backplane?
(Yeah, I build NASes for fun. Most of them aren’t this extreme.)

Yeah, I am pretty sure it’s just the connector that is different.
(My storage needs are solved by asking the storage team to increase the size of our volumes on their Pures. Or buy more of them, what’s a petabyte between friends?)

Weirdly, this thread is one of my goto resources to ask about tech stuff on the internet. Because …
I don’t know enough devs locally.
I kind of expect at least one person here to have some opinion on this next question
As previously mentioned I am writing a small web-application (currently just for myself and my partner) and so far I have been drawing my icons with inkscape (and getting better at it, too). It is a good enough look until I stumbled across https://fontawesome.com or GitHub - FortAwesome/Font-Awesome: The iconic SVG, font, and CSS toolkit
I am not normally a web developer just for fun in my spare time. Is this something that is a good idea to use or is it one of those shiny traps of tracking ?
I am sure my project would look far more professional with icons I did not draw myself but I’d rather stay away from anything questionable and I find myself at a loss to decide what this is?
Why is everything so complicated?

Web fonts in general are the weirdly acceptable version of tracking bugs. Put a 1×1 transparent pixel with a distinctive URL on your web page and everyone says “oooh, nasty tracking”. Do the same with a font served from Google or whoever, that logs just the same information, and they’re all fine with it. (Which is why I’ve now disabled font loading in my browsers, and it’s interesting to see how many sites rely on it.)
Serve the font from your own site and it becomes a lot less of a problem.
Still, I do make heavy use of https://game-icons.net/ when I am doing graphical stuff, like the PDFs for the Rallyman challenges.

the github readme mentions that the font files themselves mostly need attribution to be used and attribution is encoded in the file. So it seems I could download it. I need to study the precise license but since the project will either remain private or turn into an OSS thingy (if I can extract the personalized parts I will at some point) I have no particular worries about that.
I can do all the fancy css stuff myself. I just like the idea of having icons in a font and also having them be prettier than mine.

we have a monthly Stammtisch of up to 10 people with a core group of 6-7.
core-person-1: can’t make our usual date.
core-person-2: me neither
me: well should we move the date?
lengthy discussion of alternative dates suggests person-2 really wants to participate but has no time. lots of embarrassed “nope that date won’t work either
” follow.
me: here’s a nuudel poll with 6 dates.
5 entries later.
me: looks like we have a choice between 2 dates. these are the dates. let’s go with the one that is on our usual weekday, it has the most green checkmarks anyway.
core-person-3: yes I would actually prefer that over the other. (she had marked both the same green though)
core-person-4: hey, I am not sure I can make that day, just so you know. (she had marked both green
me: why didn’t you both use the yellow marks for “unsure” then?
both: we didn’t see them?
I mean there are 3 options: red, yellow, green. How hard can it be?

(btw it looks like the solution is to just have 2 meetups, summers are far easier with beer gardens anyway)

I made the mistake of uttering, “this software release is going well.”

One of our scrum masters has asked me to run a session for their team on the subject of “what is testing and how do you get started?”
This team used to have a dedicated tester who recently switched teams because there wasn’t enough testing to keep him occupied, and now they have some acceptance testing that needs doing. It seems to have finally dawned on them that testing is actually a distinct skill set and none of them know what they’re doing - possibly because when they told me they’d allocated 4 hours total for said acceptance testing I responded with “good luck with that”…
We’ll see how it goes!

Diving in here to see if there’s any people familiar enough with Macs to tell me why the church projection Mac always renames itself when we turn it on (or it’s WiFi)?
It seems to see a ghost of itself on the network…

We had a machine that did this a decade or so ago. The problem was it was connected to the pan via wires and sans-wires. Smashing the illicit hub it was plugged into with a hammer solved it. I expect to unplugging it would have worked too, but that’s not as much fun. (And that hub would have reappeared connected to something else).

It was connected to the local area network twice. It was not, as far as I know, involved in cooking.
