Just re-read this. Not that I’m going to do anything about it this turn. So, either the Enterprise can carry on wandering and exploring - but then does the agent do anything in the political phase to the planet? Or it can just sit in deep space until it explodes?
Oh and does replacing the Dilithium crystals take an explore action or is that done automagically when a ship goes to a starbase or suitable planet?
The Agent can try to influence the planet; their chances are worse than a Commissioner’s (1-2 for success instead of 1-3) of it actually changing that planet though. But that is still a lot better than Captain Kirk dying; I would recommend exploring system 18 this turn. Worst case scenario, the Hawk Stoops tries to Explore it as well, and the auction mechanic happens. But at least there will be something there.
As for the Dilithiums, it takes a movement to replace them so Beijing will be able to explore on Turn 5, Surak will be back on Turn 6.
“Captain’s Log, stardate 16.21.1. We are currently in orbit around Janus IV, a mining colony rich in the mineral Paxilon Hydrochlorate, which is used in air filtering systems. The chief of operations here has reported a drastic decline in production; we are being sent in to seek its cause.”
We interviewed Mr. Gore, the Chief of Operations; he reported a series of mysterious (Gore-y) deaths, resulting from acid burns. Production has been stalled, and rumors of a strange monster inhabiting the depths of the planet circulate among the terrified miners.
You may:
Investigate the idea of a life form living in the lower levels,
Consider the other alternatives, such as sabotage (not that anyone has ever been around this sector who would ever consider such methods )
Beam down the rest of the ship’s complement of Security Guards on permanent duty here to get those miners back to work! (“improve morale”… yada yada)
With tricorders and computer suggestions, we have begun a hunt for a creature which exudes acid and tunnels through solid rock. We have had little success, and Gore agrees with the idea that there must be a saboteur, especially when the main air pump is stolen, and one of our security men killed (unfortunately his dogtags didn’t survive the acid, so we don’t exactly know who he was). The air is running out, and the entire mine will have to be evacuated in 24 hours…
We have discovered a strange silicon life-form! Scotty, being very good with silicon things, identified it’s eggs that were being destroyed by the mining operations on the lowest levels, and they had a talk. Captain Kirk ordered the miners to stop killing aliens, and the alien has agreed to do likewise.
Kirk delivers his closing speech about the perils of ignoring the needs of local species in our quest to expand and satisfy our own. Scott goes off for a drink.
No one really cares or misses the expendable redshirt. He almost didn’t even get a credit this episode.
