[PbP play thread] Gamesu-Ashru: DandD 5e in the Mysterious Crystal Kingdom!

Sorry for the bad map, I am currently away from my better digital tools

The map is mostly empty - the details will be filled in as they are discovered. Some of the events and places are inevitable, some are up to your luck and eyes!

The caravan moves two squares a day (it moves at walking pace), but will be staying a few days in both of the major towns before Sandy Hill. On foot you move the same pace, but on horseback you can move twice that (a trot. Consistant canter or gallop for hours is impossible, and Poot is on a pony, so pushing it is ill advised).

Night one

Hansel’s Crew

After a lot of waiting, plodding around and more shouting the watchtower finally rumbles behind the long column. Hansel details a normal night’s duties.

“I need eyes out there, as I’ve said, though what that means will evolve over time. Hurshanu is surrounded by little hamlets and farmsteads. It’s mostly peaceful along the road, but there are lots of wild dogs, petty thieves, and drunks. Your job tonight is to keep them from stopping the caravan, at least the last third of it. Bob and I will be watching from the top.” He gestures to the Watchtower. “Anything big happens, you let a wagon driver know and they’ll signal me right quick.”

@Captbnut and @Gungeon how do Salazar and Shoo conduct their patrol?

Yisun’s Crew

Yisun takes a few minutes to talk with the three of you. Apparently now that you have resisted the effect of the mushrooms, there is no need to avoid proximity with her. Her cold voice and appearance are unsettling, but she seems to be genuinely interested in each of you.

“You have knowledge of horse breeding?” She addresses De. “Bitter Wind and Trident are some of the more prominent ancestors, though I paired his sire and dam due to their temperament more than their pedigree. His name is Brand.”
Brand looks like he actively plots the death of all creatures he can see - Yisun must be on the cutting edge of horse breeding (or be completely out to lunch), and extremely confident in her horsemanship.

She helps Moran tie Sassy to the head wagon. When dismounted it becomes obvious that she’s not very tall, and that she has a bit of a bowlegged walk. “Your animal looks like it has had a peaceful life. Best we keep it back from any trouble.” She measures Moran with her eyes. “You’ll be needing a large horse…”

Not bothered by the boldness of Poot’s questions but not being quite so trusting as to just reveal everything, Yisun gives short answers.
“These mushrooms were entrusted to me long ago. They are a weapon of sorts.”
She gives the slightest smile at Poot’s second question.
“We have a long history.” She says simply.

Once everyone is saddled and ready, Yisun simply beckons for the group to follow her.

Salazar calls to Shoo (@gungeon) - do you want to stick together for this one, or shall I take this flank and you take the other?

"Thank you Yisun, I take that as a compliment… I think? "
Moran will follow her.

De Blinks. To be part of another, to be joined is suddenly reassuring.

Then the moment passes.

“Horses, I always prefer to be with the animals rather than people. There purpose is clear, they are always true to themselves.”

“Hmm, I think it’s probably prudent to stick together. At least while we get our bearings, so to speak. Unless you would prefer otherwise, of course?”

Salazar whistles to Nyx, takes a deep breath and then he, the panther and Shoo step forwards to take a position at the head of the caravan.

Nyx stays close to his legs, her senses and night vision are a great comfort to Salazar right now. It’s dark, mostly quiet but hoots, howls, clicks and other noises break the silence enough to keep them on their toes.

‘Looks ok to me so far Shoo, this should be ok.’

Just then a loud cackle startles him, he tightens the grip on his short sword. Nyx growls softly and moves ahead and soon he loses sight of her in the gloom. He unconsciously moves half a step closer to Shoo.

@Sagantine asked for a die roll:
Rolling some dice DM dice…

d100: 19

d100: 45

Though the caravan is relatively well lit, this makes the surrounding countryside seem that much darker…

Shoo and Salazar, please make perception rolls!

Yisun’s horse suddenly switches to a fierce gallop. She has spotted something in the distance that is blocking the road.

Moran, Poot, and De, please make either an animal handling check, an athletics check, or an acrobatics check to keep up!

@IssiNoho77 asked for a die roll:
I don’t have skill in any of those, but here’s my athletics check.

d20: 18

@Cokho asked for a die roll:
Moran shouts to his horse “Buddy, we just met, but it’s time to show me how fast you can go!”
d20: 5 vs Animal handling (I got +5 in that, and also a +3 Wisdom modifier, I don’t know if it should be taken into account)

@IssiNoho77 if you don’t have proficiency in a particular skill you may still use it (provided it is not a knowledge skill), simply without the proficiency bonus - your ability modifier is added to the roll. In the case where multiple skills are presented, pick the one that you have the highest modifier in! If everything is equal, pick the one that most accurately reflects your character’s personality.

@Cokho The +5 animal handling already includes your +3 bonus!

Thanks for the clarification, that’s what I thought. I just meant I didn’t have a modifier in any of them, so I just picked athletics and (hopefully!) rolled lucky :).

@captbnut asks for a die roll with a +5 modifier

[roll 1d20]

Got it below, 13+5=18

@Captbnut asked for a die roll:
d20: 13

(so rules wise, how do rolls work? Is there a number I’m suppose to reach?)

@Sagantine (The DM) has a number (or scale) of numbers in mind - your roll affects the outcome. I’ve never DM’d but I know a 20 is good for the player and a 1 is bad. I don’t know how the DM decides what a 10 is worth, compared to a 13 - I’d love to know
