Another new RPG purchase this weekend: Outgunned from 2 Little Mice. Aiming to replicate the adrenaline rush of classic action films, it should be a lot of fun and one I’m aiming to try solo using the solo rules in the Assistant Director expansion. The “Director’s Cut” system of rolling fistfuls of d6 and trying to getting matching numbers/symbols (two-, three- or more- of a kind) rather than beating a certain target number seems like a nice challenge.
I’ve just bought the core rulebook and the Action Flicks vol 1 book to see how it adapts to other action/film genres for now, and may consider getting more volumes of the Action Flicks expansions or the Adventure (for pulp action) or Superheroes (backerkit just finished) standalone core books if these work out well.
I looked at the Superhero game, downloading the quickstart rules. I decided that I would play it if offered, but since I tend to be the GM, I’d have to run it and it didn’t grab me enough for that.
I’m least likely to buy the Superhero version myself: partially because there in a superhero ruleset covered in one of the other Action Flicks books, and partially because I played a few different superhero games back in the day (Marvel Super Heroes, Golden Heroes and Heroes Unlimited) so would stick with one of those if playing that genre again. The Adventure setting appeals much more for that Indiana Jones or Fortune and Glory vibe, and I never really had any “modern” setting non-superhero games in my teens other than the Plalladium Systems’ Ninjas and Superspies and original TMNT, which were great fun (especially character creation) but a bit of a slog mechancially to actually play.
As someone who’s only ever fired an airgun - and that was many years ago on a Scout camp - my choice of hero for my first solo game is probably going to be based on MacGuyer. The original 80s one, mind, not the remake. It was either that or on Iko Uwais’ Rama from The Raid.
I mean, if you put them both in a tight spot with only a pencil, a paperclip, and some string, I think one of the two outcomes would be a lot more violent than the other…
As someone who thinks Hard Boiled is genuinely one of the best action movies, I will absolutely play an rpg where I get to fire two guns while diving through the air, yes.
